Many reasons...
Two main things were serious misuse that caused huge bills and there was major security loophole.
Also we had started using Mediafire and Box.net, both which do fine with raw distribution (boards are filled with raw material).

Even though it's been down for about 5 years, this post from 10 months ago sums it up nicely (It's currently the stickied post on the front page of TCP)

http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=25736.0

People think they are entitled to downloading everything all at once, and seeing that there is no limitation of size on some scans (I can scan a cover at a ridiculous DPI and get the filesize to be a little north of 200MB), Snowcone would be paying hand over fist.

That... and if someone thought it would be hilarious to upload a virus, there really wasn't stopping anybody from doing so.

I'm interested in the raw scans, so I can practice doing covers. I'm sending an email to Snowcone for more info on how to get an archive.

Personally, I think torrents, newsgroups or mirc could be better to solve the bandwidth issues

Those scans in the raws section were mostly bad and are probably deleted.
For which console you want raws?
I have some SNES and some NES raws.

Arseen,

Of the consoles and handhelds list, on this page, I have 27consoles and 7handhelds I have others, but they are not listed...

My goal is to get raw scans so I can make accurate covers. I'm not saying I'm any good at making covers but you got to start somewhere. So any systems quality raw scans are helpful. I sent an email to Snowcone to see if there's a way to get an archive of the raws...

You can still access the "Raw Cover Scans" section on archived versions of the site:

-> https://web.archive.org/web/20170722220521/http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/raw/

But like the others have said, it is not really worth it. There were only very few uploads anyway. If you are looking for RAWs, you can find tons on the forums.

Folks - The raw scans are still there. I just don't have them linked to anything. There was never a security issue. Let me see how big the archive is as I've also got a 100GB archive from Cover galaxy I need to do something with.

Snowcone,

I'd be willing to send a portable hard drive to get an archive, I would need to know how large and if you are willing. After not having access to the site for a couple days, with it being scraped... It would be hard to lose the site as a resource.

Thanks

@Starbuck777

You are not listening! :)

The "Raw Cover Scans" section of the main site has never seen much action in the first place and was abandoned years ago. There are only a handfull of cover scans (20 at most) in each category and it does not even incluce the current generation (PS4, Xbox One, Switch, WiiU, 3DS, etc.).

Again you can access the whole thing yourself with the archive link I posted earlier.

There is nothing to be gained from it and I would rather Snowcone spends his time getting TCP back on track then with this nonsense. ;)

Um, there are way more than ~20 covers per console in the archive.  WAY more.

THIS!

Upload your scans to a hosting site (box.com, mediafire, etc.) and then link them to the correct thread in this forum (or create your own scans thread).  Just make sure you name them correctly and what they are in the post to make it easy to search for them.  The search function really is the most useful thing on this forum as long as things are tagged correctly.
