I've never had that problem.  I still use my Retron 5 to this day for any game I want save states for.  Although I don't think I ever really bother transferring saves back and forth to the carts.  I just use the save files the system has.

Do you ever play the carts in something besides a retron5 AFTER putting them in to a retron5?

That’s how I found out

It's also entirely possible that the save state battery is dead. They're getting to be 30 and 40 years old now.

I haven't tried personally, I prefer to run my games on original hardware. Not that I judge anybody for using a retron or similar clone console. I just see so many retron's that have a variety of issues including now power, shitty edge connectors, some won't read one type of cartridge, etc. We've had a few customers at our retail stores that had Retron5's that were brand new out of box take a dump after only a day or two, made us have to deal with Hyperkin directly. They're QC seems to need a bit of tweaking.

Yes.  But I dont save. I use the built in save states.  One game, for example, Mario RPG.  I had a cart save at the end boss.  Went back and replayed it in R5 start to finish.  5 mins ago popped the cart into my super nt and the save was there.  So I don't use the cart save transfer to Retron feature. That might be where the problem is? I don't know. I also just popped a link to the past in to test it. Didn't do the transfer save, but played it for 10 minutes and then popped it into the Super NT. Save file still there.

None of my cart batteries are old.

I didn’t even know the retron could transfer saves. I just know it’s wiped my save files on a number of carts.

I can second this, and I sometimes use it to transfer saves back and forth when replacing cart batteries. Also, as to the edge connectors thing, I've seen some people say to use a touch of dielectric grease to ease the death grip on the carts. The only one that was tight on my system was the SNES one, but I just bought an old Retron 2 and de-soldered the edge connector from that and swapped my Retron5's SNES edge connector with that. The grip is much less violent, and just feels higher quality? I don't know how to say it, but it's 100% more reliable now. And really, I just use my Retron for big screen Gameboy and Game Gear or to play English patches on my JP games.
