Chances are, the xbox may never be sold. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices in this economy.

So, when the economy is in rough shape, it becomes OK to rip people off? That's part of why it's in the shape that it is right now; selfish, greedy morons. Way to be not only short-sighted, but hindsight blind as well.

I didn't realize it would touch such a nerve. I know for a fact that Gamestop refurbishes consoles that are traded in, so it's extremely unlikely that my old console would just be re-sold as-is. Besides, their used consoles all come with a warranty, so a buyer could swap it out if they bring it home and it doesn't work.
I've traded in games at Gamestop that were scratched, and they've deducted a "refurbishing fee" from my trade value. Refurbishing consoles and games is part of their business. Nobody gets ripped off if they accept a trade of a broken item, whether they know it's broken or not. Because of the high profit margins involved in selling used items, and their ability to refurbish nearly anything to good working condition, it's no surprise that Gamestop will accept nearly anything in trade. There's very little risk on their part.
I just bought a replacement original Xbox from Game Exchange. I had to swap it out twice (one unit's drive door wouldn't open, the other wouldn't read discs). It wasn't a big deal to me to return to the store for the exchanges - that's what the warranty is for.
I'm sorry if my actions offended anybody here, however, I think the name calling and swearing was uncalled for. I didn't rip anybody off. I simply took advantage of a service that a major retailer offers.

You would be incorrect. GameStop only charges a refurbishment fee if the unit is not working when it is tested. You tricked the employee into taking in you defective unit as a properly working one. The system is then cleaned, repackaged and sold immediately.
Most consoles are bought as gifts (trust me). Just imagine a 7 year olds face when he realized he got an xbox360 for his birthday! Other family member were in on it too and got him some games for him to play and he is overzealous with joy. Then he hooks up the system to find out that the system doesn't work at all. He is crushed on his birthday.
Yeah, to top that all off the parent (rightfully so) is COMPLETELY pissed off that someone sold the system to them. You just fucked over the 16 year behind the counter and he gets the guilt trip of a lifetime that he just ruined a 7 year olds birthday. That person who tested the system gets in MAJOR trouble because they 'didn't test the system' and caused a huge problem. All because you wanted to save a few bucks.
No excuses, its wrong.
