Protection against fire?

Hi everyone,

One thing that concerns me when having a game collection is all of it disappearing due to an unforeseen fire or other form of disaster. This always seemed like a farfetched idea but I know it can easily happen to anyone (it unfortunately happened to Jl3legend, which brings it to my mind).

Does anyone have anything in place or have any ideas to prevent fires/damage or is there anything to look into purchasing to have some sort of peace of mind at the very least? I haven't looked into it, but I imagine there's always insurance too. I just wanted mainly wanted to start a discussion and see what anyone else's thoughts were.

I will be honest, Insurance does crap all to pay for "collectables". At best you will get a check that is 10¢ on the dollar for value. It sucks to hear it but it is the truth.

I disagree.  A good insurance company will properly insure anything at it's full value, but you need to understand that it will cost you money.  I've never priced it out specifically for video games, but based on other personal article policies I've seen, I would guess that a $30,000 collection might run $500 a year or more.  I certainly wouldn't pay that.

Some will make you have a "professional" come and assess the value, some will require receipts, some will simply take your word for it (as long as you can provide proof that you actually do own what you're claiming, usually in the form of detailed photos), but you'll pay for it regardless.
