Does one really need one because of PS3?
All versions have HDMI and are 100% PS1 backwards compatible, right?

Playing on original hardware is just the tits.  Also, you can play the games but not use any peripherals. No GameShark, no PS Mouse, one handed controller, light gun, or any other crazy Contraptions that came out in that era. Besides, who still has a PS3 hooked up?

The glove controller... oh man... I really never want to pull that back out =P

I have 1x Slim PS3 hooked up in the living room (along with the PS4) that is tied to the TV remote for Kelly.

I have 9x Slim PS3's in a boxed labeled "Hack Me!"

1x Phat PS3 somewhere that is backwards compatible
1x Phat PS3 somewhere that isn't, but still works
1x Super-Slim in pieces that needs a new HDD at the base of my workstation downstairs

and about 4x PS3s that are for parts (next to the other 2x PS4s).

Oh, I forgot about the 2nd PS3 in the living room in the GameStop PS3 kiosk.  Technically there is an empty shell on display on that thing... but thats... not really real....

When you can get them for like... $20-30 in the past... I figured I might as well get the ones I could hack lol...

I get that the Gameshart wouldn't work, but I wasn't aware of any incompatibility with the mouse or one handed controllers.

And of course my PS3 is hooked up currently.  Why wouldn't it be?
ShoothimNow:
plus, there is a PS2 to USB adapter.  I've used it to get a turbo controller onto the PS3 to slowdown a couple speedrun games to enable me the ability to platinum those trophy lists.  So you can totally connect a PS1 / PS2 controller to the PS3

No one needs any of these classic units. I'd want a PSone with an optical drive & HDMI port for nostalgic and collectors reasons. Honestly, I don't like fake cartridge ports or drives that don't actually work.
Megatron:
I forgot about the glove controller.  That was ass!  Thankfully, the one handed RPG controller actually work pretty well. I remember when my daughter was born I didn't have a whole lot of game time, but I mastered holding her with one arm, and playing some of those old RPGs with the other. Was pretty handy.  (See...see what I did there?)

And the PS3 comment was a joke.  Probably should have added a  ;) to it to hammer it home.

That said, I still don't like using psx games on a ps3. Or even a ps2.  I have one system with scart and another with hd retrovision cpmponent cables with psx adapter.

Bottom line, these throwback consoles are not necessary for me, but I have fun with them. And I am really looking forward to a nice PS1 throwback if for nothing else than mastalgia
