Game or Console?
Dr.Agon:
Hey guys,
So I have a bit of a dilemma, hoping for some inspiration from you lot,
I get paid in about 5 days and I have the option of buying either a console I've wanted for a while now, or a game that's also been on my want list for ages, I can't afford both so I have to make a decision, the thing is they're both quite "rare", or at least they don't show up that often, so I'm worried I won't see either of them again for a long time...
Not gonna post any more info, just looking for input/opinion to help me decide...
Thanks 😊

I can't speak for across the Atlantic, but in the US I see consoles appear a lot more frequently online than specific games (when both are rare). In stores it's always a toss up.
What I have done in these situations is look at the price trends for the past 5 years or so. Has the console doubled in price, while the game tripled? Has the game barely gone up but the console skyrocketed? If I eventually plan to get both, I look to see what will likely go up the least in the next few years until I am able to consider it again. Basically trying to make sure I spend the least amount total.
Other than that, I say what would bring me more joy for longer. Are there games on the console you want to play? Is this game something you'll either play forever or display at the forefront of your collection? Based on those answers, I would make a choice.
And if you STILL can't decide, flip a coin. If you're upset with the outcome, then you likely favor one more than the other.

For me personally, I tend to go with the hardware over the games, because more often than not, I can find another way to play the game (flashcart, CDR, etc.). But there is no replacement for original hardware.
SegaNomadman:
On my end it would depend. Which one do you think you would come across again later? If one is more rare than the other, I'd go for that. Especially if you think you may never come across it again.

Find me a game as rare as the CoroCoro or Tower Records Gameboy micro, or a McDonalds DSi. The reason it seems like games are rarer than consoles is because the truly rare consoles are much, MUCH rarer than any single game could ever be.
All that said, I don’t think I can offer any advice as to which item you should buy, especially not knowing what the choices are. I’ve got more consoles and games than I’ll ever play in my lifetime, but consoles look better on shelves, so that’s where I tend to spend my gaming bucks.
