Does your retro collection have a fixed end goal, a point at which you could say you have collected every gaming item you ever wanted? Or does your want list change or grow over time?

When I first got back into retro gaming, it was about getting the games I loved as a kid. Along the way I camed to appreciate having a shelf full of awesome looking games and this site made me realize how much I liked the look of well displayed games. Having the cover art in the case reminded me of being in a Babbages, Electronics Boutique, or Blockbuster video back in the 90s, looking at shelf after shelf stacked with games I wanted.

I fell in love with the hunt. After finding copies of my favorite old games, I began searching for the games I never got to play that I'd missed out on, those gems I'd never discovered. I loved searching craigslist, thrift stores, and garage sales and coming back with a haul to show off here to fellow tcpers. This led me to expand into other systems besides my first love of snes and secondly nes. I reacquired an atari jaguar, ps2, and picked up all the best original xbox games. Handhelds got some love too.

After awhile, as the collection grew, I realized that I barely played any of this stuff. I didn't take pleasure in blowing a whole evening on a gaming marathon like I did when I was a kid. I had all these games which, though my collection was significantly smaller than other tcp bros, it still took up a lot of room for something I didn't really use.

I became paranoid about my collection. What if thieves broke in and stole everything? It happened once in my car when I had the ds collection in a backpack in the back seat. One morning, poof!! Gone. I should look into a security alarm system. What about an earthquake or fire? I need insurance for these games.

I realized that I didn't take pleasure in the games like I thought I would. I began to consider the possibility of selling them but I always felt a twinge of sadness over this so I thought 'wait... see if you still feel like this in a month'. I sat down and played some of these games I had enjoyed as a kid and the ones that I never got to experience which I'd heard so many gpod things about. In 10 minutes, I was bored.

I came to terms with the fact that I was not a serious collector or gamer, though I still wanted the option to play if the desire reignited so I picked up an sd2snes cart and a modded xbox and called it a day.

I still like to check in at my favorite retro gaming sites, tcp and Nintendo age. I'm amazed at how dedicated some of the true collectors are, continuing to build their massive gaming rooms with shelf after shelf of games for multiple systems, beautiful displayed, a true monument to video games from the golden era of the 80s 90s and on.

Tldr: tc nostalgic over his old collection but realized he took more pleasure in the hunt than actually gaming.

What are your collecting/gaming goals? With retro games, do you have a point where you'll eventually be done and the collection will be complete, or is it a moving goal post? Do you take as much pleasure in collecting and gaming as you once did, or does your collecting appetite wax and wane? Would you be really sad if it all disappeared in a fire? Would you rebuild or move on and reinvest time into other things?

Having a modded xbox with 4000 games made me realize that I was never going to play everything. Life is short. Even if I only devoted one day to each game, I would be using time I can't get back that I could put into other things. I don't know. I don't mean to ramble. Just had this on my chest and wanted to see what you guys think if you ever feel like this.

I've never really had a specific goal, although my tastes and focuses have changed over the years.  My focus lately has been on playing games.  I've put a lot of work into having the ability to play any and all games on their original hardware.  I've acquired flash carts for most of the cart based systems I own and I've been working on the equivalent for most of my disc based systems.  That isn't to say that I don't buy games anymore, but I don't buy nearly as many games as I used to.  At this point, I pretty much only buy PS1 games and modern system games.  PS1 is my biggest passion, and the only system that I would truly want a full set for.  I'm still back and forth on whether or not I want to cut back on some of my collection.  Not too long ago, I sold off most of my Saturn games.  I was successful in selling everything in a short time for a good amount of money.  I'm still thinking about some of my other systems.  One thing I know that I will never do is sell the stuff that I remember from my childhood.  That stuff I will keep forever.  The games that I will probably end up selling within the next year or two will be the games that I didn't grow up with AND I have the ability to play by other means such and flash carts or backups.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

I have a "wish list" of games that I've created for every system I own. It has been compiled based on recommendations from various websites and friends as well as aggregated reviews. I can't imagine ever completing most of these lists, but it helps me to make informed purchases when buying games. I won't buy a game that's not on my list unless it's incredibly cheap or bundled with games I want.

I still very much enjoy playing my old games! Even more than that, I love seeing the smiles on people's faces when they see my collection and are able to pick out their favorite childhood games and play them. Also, I like finding the games I collect as much as I do playing them, it's a fun hobby. Maybe someday I'll get sick of my game collection, but for now I'm happy to have them.

Excellent question!

Only goal I have is to only collect games I realistically want to play at some point.  And once I have it and play it, if I don't see myself playing it again some day, I pass it on to someone else.

Used to aim for every game that looked fun or had appealing artwork or a special gimmick or unique feature or was part of i series i like that  one game from or some other inane reasonfrom every system I owned.  Just got to be way too much and became more of an obsession than an enjoyment.  Once I started being selective and sold off most my collections, I found I enjoyed what was left so much more.

So I met my major goal in collecting in december of 2015. I was going for a collection of every working design game. Trust me it was not easy or cheap. I remember getting the last one. Exile: wicked phenomenon on the TG-16. After that I felt a bit empty thinking "well... what now"

I struggled with motivation for collecting but realized that my stepson and Granddaughter enjoyed my collection too. I am still collecting, and trust me there is a lot for me to get out there. Still need a PS4 and a switch, but I am taking the time to enjoy the games more now.

Started with my favorite system the NES.  Now that I have mostly everything I want for it I mainly collect for handhelds now.  Absolutely love collecting for the Vita.  Games are so cheap and good.  Also I am on a hunt for every singlr release of the Silent Hill series (my favorite) across all regions including GH version ad cover variants.

I'm pretty frugal (ie. Cheap), so the rewarding part is just finding a good deal.  I refuse to buy anything at market value unless it's very cheap.  I'll even go so far as to refurbish old consoles I got for cheap to use.

I don't play the games a ton.  I got into it for nostalgic reasons (started with wanting a snes and super mario world, as I only had a genesis as a kid. Grass is always greener.).

The thing you realize really quick, is most of the games you enjoyed as a kid.... Well... They suck.  Yeah they're fun for a bit, but I spent countless hours playing sonic Spinball or sonic 2, and I just don't have the patience anymore.

What keeps me going is building up a collection that looks good, that has some fun games I can crack some beers with a buddy and play for a couple hours, and presents well on a shelf.  One day I'll probably sell it, or hopefully my future kids can enjoy it like I once did.

Like many others, I feel like I have multiple collecting objectives.
Obviously, I'm out for a good deal.  Even if I have no plan to ever play they game, if I can find an expensive game for cheap I will pounce just to say I have it.  For example, I couldn't care less about Clay Fighter Sculptor's Cut.  However, when I found a copy dirt cheap a few years ago I grabbed it. Why not?  I'm also interested in anything weird or unique I come across, anything that I feel would look cool on a shelf - i.e. obscure third party NES or Master System peripherals.

Other than that, I have focused my goals toward my favorite genres and systems.  Give myself some direction.  Right now I am focusing on collecting all the PS1 Horror titles (which I just completed with my pickup of Countdown: Vampires  ;D) as well as all PS1 RPGs, which I am about 11 or 14 away from completing, depending on whether you count titles/games like Monster Rancher among the term "RPG".  Even with these goals, I'm not really interested in paying market value on eBay for these.  I like to find stuff in the wild, it's a nice thrill.

Lastly there are a handful of titles I would like to play/acquire but am in no rush and only want if I can get them cheap.  Time Splitters Future Perfect for Gamecube, Killer 7 for Gamecube, or Predator Concrete Jungle for PS2 to name a few.

But like what many others have said, there is still fun in the hunt.  And as long as that's there, I'll keep going.

I mainly collect stuff that I like. If I think I'll never play a game, I usually don't go for it. That's part of why I don't go for sealed games unless it's something special. Although, if something is a great deal, I'll go for it. Sometimes I do have short goals for myself . Right now I want to get a hold of most of the Virtual Boy games because I think it's a REALLY cool system. I figure I'm not going to get games like Jack Bros. though. Unless I find it for a great price, I'm not gonna spend that much on the game.
To be this good it takes AGES!

I enjoy both sides of it, gaming and collecting. My primary goal is completing the entire US release library for SNES and N64, cart + manual for all of them. With custom cases rather than the original boxes of course. I probably will play like 85% of those games one time but just having them all is so cool, those two consoles were a huge part of my childhood and the art styles and games just bring me joy by looking at them. The other side of it is, gaming and collecting retro games is one of my biggest hobbies. I love going through these forums, searching on eBay or Craigslist or whatever for deals, and boxing new games to display. So it doesn't really drag on my conscious like you mentioned when taking up space, if I wasn't spending money on this I'd be doing something else so I don't feel guilty or anything. It's kind of like a stamp or coin collection with the games you don't actually play. They don't do anything, but who cares, you enjoyed the ride of collecting and like seeing them on the shelf.

I love the gaming side too though, I primarily play retro games if I'm not playing Switch or PC. I stick to first party titles usually, Marios and Zeldas  and what not, but occasionally I'll fire up the odd game to play it. Once I finish my SNES and N64 library I'm honestly not sure what I'll do. Maybe GameCube or NES? I played GameCube a ton as a kid but it doesn't bring quite as much nostalgia as the prior two consoles. For now I'll just get the few games I want for GC and NES though, no sense in spending tons of money if I'm not committed to collecting the whole library.

I've pretty much stopped collecting (own way too many games in a small apartment) as when I was buying them, they were all $1-$5 (even for Mario games).  Now, that price has skyrocketed.  All my money has been going to student loans instead.  But I have been purchased the needed NES games that Shenske needs as no one seems to want to help him finish that up...

My only current (and rather lofty) goal is a complete set of 3DS XL/LL consoles.  I’ve got a long way to go, but I’m in no rush at all.

Other than that, I just buy stuff I want to play, or consoles that I’d like in my collection.
