There should be a rule that you can’t start a pickups thread without pictures of pickups :P

So, a friend who I met as a customer years ago sent me the best Xmas gift that I received lol!

Mind you, that’s the automotive white. Not the ceramic or pearl white. As in limited to 500 units per region.

Actually got this for "Christmas". (Just something my wife and I bought and saved to open until Dec 25th, not an actual present). It's pretty fun, but the holder the phone sits in that goes in the headset gave us all kinds of problems with the 3 phones we have. This works with iPhone and most Androids. We have 3 Androids in our place. An old Sony Xperia X3 that isn't being used, her Samsung Galaxy Note 8, and my Galaxy S7 Active. None of them would fit in the holder. The Sony didn't have the USB port in the right spot (needs to be on the bottom), her phone was too long, and mine was too thick. Finally I got mine to fit without the holder, with a piece of cardboard to fill the gap. The other pain was that you need to download a free 600mb app to use the thing, which was "fun" to do 3 times with no Wi-Fi (I put sim card in Sony phone temporarily to download app on that phone).

All in all it's pretty fun. I'll post an unboxing/ review video to YouTube soon.

^^^ this is why I really don’t care for products which require use of a phone. I got my son this viewfinder thing for Xmas, and it requires a phone and an app. Otherwise it’s just a hunk of plastic. It’s terribly inconvenient.

Thinking of just buying a cheap $20 smartphone and leaving it in the headset forever.

I picked up one of those smart phone VR headsets at Target about 2 months ago.  It was on clearance for $10 so I figured why not.  It's not fantastic, and I don't really recommend it, but it was a cheap way to test out whether or not I could use VR without getting immediate motion sickness.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

That is pretty.  I would love to have a white PS2, PS3 and PS4 (even PSTV), but that's not likely to happen any time soon.

  • I'm kind of idle... at least for now.
Technically a repost from the December 2017 pickups, but who could not resist sharing this anyway?

and a quote from RecOne himself about his thoughts on this:
My biggest problems with the joy cons are the lack of a proper d-pad (got a lot of the ACA Neo Geo games) and the poor performance of the left joy con (looses the connection all the time).

The 8bitdo controllers just feel "right" - i also prefer them over the "pro controller" from Nintendo.
The only thing that they are missing is the HD rumble feature (they just have "normal" rumble feature) - but i don't care about that.

I myself mostly use this as a wired X-Input gamepad, as a) I don't have a Nintendo Switch yet and b) wireless X-Input functionality broke on the first day of the New Year. It's a trade off, however, as select Windows programs do support rumble (maybe motion controls as well? We'll see.), say the Dolphin emulator for Wii/GCN games. I also experimented with RetroPie (on a Raspberry Pi 1) and Android functionality (I really need to upgrade.).

I fired up Minecraft once when the first beta hit the web. Immediately closed it and never touched it again.

Something like that could seriously consume my life lol

Same here. I totally understand the appeal, but I could never get into it myself. My girlfriend absolutely loves it.

Minecraft is seriously addicting. I played an early build and spent a ridiculous amount of time building and exploring. I picked it up again a couple years ago and couldn't believe all the additions that had been added like farming and redstone (electricity). I got addicted all over again and spent a year building my own metropolis filled with secret passageways and hidden switches. I played so much I was dreaming about Minecraft at night. I'm sure I'll play again in the future, but it's definitely the type of game that can take over all your free time if you let it.
