Has anyone tried making/buying some sort of dvd/ugc storage shelf which can be expanded as your game collection grows? if so does anyone have any pics/blue prints of them?

You know, I was looking for the same thing. I might actually go ahead and make one with my dad sometime during the summer, so maybe I can post pics of that.

yeah i was thinking making something outa cheap wood would be the ideal solution, the shelf im using right now is way to big as in its like 2 dvds thick which is alot of wasted space, i was thinking something thinner (1 dvd thick) and so many wide.

but yeah something i can add more to the top or side depending on how my collection grows and how much space i have, also something that can be taken apart for when you move etc

Do you plan on mounting the shelving to the wall?  My plan is to mount white shelves to the wall that will sit flush with the Drywall.  All you need are the mounting brackets and then have the shelves cut to fit.  Your local Home Depot style retailer should have all of this on the cheap.  I have installed one already to mount my center channel above the TV.  Below is a pic of the finished product.

For the shelving, I am going to use much smaller brackets since I won't be supporting nearly as much weight.  Also, ignore the white piping you see going down the center, that's just to hide wires on each side of my display.  I have a small area in my front room that is ready to accept shelves heading from top to bottom.  I don't have a game room, and all of my storage is off to the right of that, so most of my games are in boxes:(, and have been for a few years now since I've been married and had little ones.  Below is a pic of that area.

If you have that amount of space, you can put something together that can hold 600-700 titles for about $150!!!!

I built my shelves with fairly cheap lumber @ home depot.
I think it was 1" x 6" x whatever length you need

Here's a pic of my shelves and my desk. Though my shelves are much more full now and I have needed to expand to the middle shelves.

Wow, very impressive! I've got low ceilings in my room, so my shelf will probably end up stretching out quite a bit. I like your figures too :D

Nothing I made is bolted to the wall....and the desk came lastly in the project. I did both towers first.

Just look at the cheapo ones at Wal-Mart and get an idea from them.  Let them lean against the wall.

i currently have over 1500 dvd's not counting my games and collectibles , im useing 4 dvd shelves  that are 9 rows high and about 3 feet wide ( combo of store bought and self made) and its not enough lol . so i want to build a cabinet similar to what game stop uses in most of their stores in the USA , Itll be 5 or 6 drawers high with each drawer holding two rows worth of dvd cases  then on top of that will be normal shelves to display whatever i want seen so hopefully i can get approximately 15 rows of stuff where only 9 rows  fit now. when im all done i will post picks and measurements  for anyone interested

I also have a lot of media (~1500 DVDs + ~1500CDs + an ever increasing game collection of a comparable size) and when I move out of student accommodation (next year) I think I'm going to have to custom build something (which I don't mind). I can't see anything other than multiple bookcase style shelves and they all seem pretty generic. Yeah, if you could post pics Beastman when/if you do that. Would be nice to see how that pans out.

An easy solution is to purchase Billy Bookcases from IKEA,

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/13690607

I've purchased them for my room, you can buy additional shelves and fit up to 8 "DVD" height levels.  The standard shelf in the link provided holds a considerable amount of DVDs.  They are also pretty versatile (as they are deep enough to fit books) if you want to put other stuff on there.

It's also generally pretty affordable unless you build your own I guess.

I'll post some pics of my collection soon.

I think if anyone is looking for something that's JUST RIGHT for them.... building it is the only way to go.

My Wal-Mart book case fell apart under the weight of my Guides and my wife's books

Cheap particle board and poor quality backing were to blame for its demise, and my wife tried to move it by pushing it without lifting it ::)
