Did you ever try it, I have both versions, one with and without the serial port, both fit, of course the serial port gives it maybe a millimeter more bulge, but it fits.

My N64 Gameshark has the port on the back and it fits just fine in a UGC just fine. Slight buldge but it fits.

Huh, maybe my plastic is abit more durable:





It's a universal game case from MediaShelving, that's the only case I ever used, but if you found a solution that works for you then cool, can't wait to see the pics.

Got these at a local computer store.  They aren't cheap (4 bucks a pop).  I'm sure they could be bought in bulk online for a lot less, but I only needed a few.  I used one for my BSX cart, another for the SNES Game Genie, the N64 GS, and the Dreamcast GS too.
