Mislabelled original covers

First of all, I'm very grateful for everyone who has uploaded covers here. I know it can take up a lot of time. I have looking through for covers for various games. I find that there are quite a few covers labelled as 'original' when they are clearly not.

My preference is for original covers, just like they were when sold in stores many years ago (touch-up is fine). Maybe it's just me, but I see the trend of the Cover Project where more people are focusing on customized covers.

Well, just in Genesis alone, I saw quite a few:

Sonic 3d Blast
Sonic and Knuckles
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2

And that's just after looking at the Sonic games alone. There are more and also with other systems.

Well, looking at the entry for Sonic The Hedgehog, the labelling does seem both arbitrary and confusing. Retail covers go by "Original cover", "Retail cover", and even just "Cover". "Original cover" is quite ambiguous, not to mention a completely superfluous label when the much more explicit "Retail cover" and "Custom cover" exist. On that note, looking at the upload page those are the only two options - as it should be - so where did these other labels come from in the first place?

How does "original" mean a user's original cover? They don't look like the retail ones, so they are custom. But there is already a "custom" category.


Retail = Original = store-bought cover design.

That's the way it should be.

I agree but i surpose goin through them all and changing them all would be a bit time consuming for snowy and the crew, guess new uploads will just have to do for now QQ

You are correct

Custom means that it differs in some way to the original retail cover.
Retail means that it is a direct scan of the retail cover with no modifications to it (except some cleaning).
Original is the old way to describe retail. But since UGC covers are not truly "retail" it was changed a little to clarify. The name was changed a wile ago to make it more clear.

To give you an example.
Sega CD, 3DO, Sega Saturn and PS1 covers made into a DVD case cover are in theory "Custom"
Most PS2, PS3, 360 and Xbox covers are "Retail" (unless it is different from the one you buy in the store).
Dreamcast cases on DVD are "custom", but the ones made for CD jewel cases are "retail".

As I side note, I was the one who suggested changing the title from "original" to "retail".

I know it was confusing to me when I first came here, because original cover could mean it's someone's original idea for a cover.
Could you possibly change it to "Retail Cover" or something?

Doom, so "original" is essentially the old term used instead of "retail".

However, I've seen many covers under the "original" category that are in no way like the retail, but are customised by uploaders.

Oh my god.... People with no insight talk about stuff people with insight had no insight into and talked about it for quite some tiem to get an insgiht into the stuff they had no insight into before....

On topic:

Long ago there was a time when the coverprojects own site was started. At this time there were no extremly strict rules on naming covers or using specific desciptors... So all the weird descriptors come from the old age.... NOW there are only two descriptors for covers which we(the Admins) agreed too.

Retail Covers = if the cover resembles the retail artwork/style, it doesn't have to be 100% retail but mostly which means you can use a template or freshly drawn logos etc....

Custom = The creator has used different artwork

That's all.... Sometime in the distant future maybe all the covers will be changed to the right descriptors... If someone finds the time....

Until then people should rather be thankful that there are covers for so many games in high quality....
