I've seen a few threads come up recently about using half dvd covers as replacement casings for PS1 games. I think throwing together covers for these would be a great idea, so long as we come up with a resolution and a standard of cases to buy. These would be extremely easy to throw together covers for, seeing as the cases are almost the exact size of a jewel case. My idea for a PS1 template is to leave the cover as-is, just with the addition of the playstation logo on the sidebar:

Keep in mind this was not made in the intent of actually making a cover, but giving an example of how the covers could be made. I just threw this together with some images I grabbed from Cdcovers.cc. So, anyone interested?

I'll be working on my own for a while... I don't know if this is a big enough thing for everyone to jump on board.

If everyone wants to give this a wack, I suggest looking for cases with the same dimensions as the sleeves total length on the DVD cases.... that way you can use standard (8.5 x 11) border-less still

The ones I purchased need a sleeve JUST over the 11" mark, making my printing an issue.
(I will be making the cover in 2 halves and taping the backsides of them together)

Another issue that comes up with the Half Height cases is that there are a lot of different sizes of them out there.

I found the ones I wanted, but they don't make that particular size in double case
(at least not that I could Find)

The problem with half size DVD cases is that they are not readily available in stores. In most cases people will have to order them online and even then, they are about the same price (only 2 or 3 cents cheaper per unit).
If you have nothing to do... Don't do it here!

I dug up my failure of a project from over a year ago.

I guess the name really turned out to be true. I'd love have covers from a project like this, but I don't think the current template would work well. The normal PS1 spines are more suited for slim cases, and the spine sapped from the DVD template is designed for a DVD case.

Yeah that's pretty much what I was going for. I'd only change the bland spine because I like the continuity of it between all the cases, whereas some ps1 spines were never the same. I say keep the bland but throw in a logo. We might be able to fit it better to be designed for a slim case, but hey, I threw it together in 6 minutes tops :P

Well, you figure we make covers for UGC's and you can't grab em at retail for the most part. Same with DS cases unless you're lucky.

Anyone got other ideas for a mockup of a template? Or even a standard case for everyone to buy?

This is a half height DVD case.

I personally bought them to make the spines nicer...I have 90% of the original cases for my games, but dislike the bland plain ps1 spines.
It also gives me a chance to take any RPG in a double disc size case that only has 1 disc..and save some space. (MTV music Generator, Suikoden, Alundra, Alundra 2)

I live all the way down here in New Zealand so we dont really have anyone that supplies 1/2 dvd cases, the cases i mentioned the dvd store used back in the day, clear plastic ones with sleeves and thick enough to hold even the biggest ps1 manual, i found a site that supplies them, any of you guys used these kind before.

Since i prefer the sturdy plastic case i linked insted of cd jewel cases i tried my shot at a cover for it, printed it, fits well, looks good, but tell me what you think, i used the cover scans by wshbrngr for it.

Oh yeah and this is for the Pal look where the retail versions have the black strip at the bottom XD

I want a scan of the shiney hologram playstation sticker to go before the "playstation" on the bottom of the front cover, as pal games had that sticker on the cd case in that spot XD

Thjose are pretty similar looking in size to some amaray cases i got a while back.  Can't find a supplier right now though - i have used them to recase some PS1 and Dreamcast PAL games, and they look great!

As for the scan of the holograph - don't thint you'll have much luck - i think you'd be better off recreating the look of the holograph in grey/black/white and putting it in the space.

I think this might work out quite well.  It would be nice to use the original instruction manual inside and have it fit.

  • ...and that's the bottom line
If you're willing to share the covers you're more than welcome. Someone out there will need and use them.
Depending on how uncommon or difficult to find the cases are we might not be able to host them with the other covers, but we could host them in this thread.
