Recently, I acquired a stash of about 16 black UGCs through videogamecentral.com. I wasn't expecting them to be black, because the website didn't specify that they were. What really perplexed me is that they are not the same dimensions as the clear ones that I've gotten before, which has caused some problems as you might imagine. For example, I can't print up covers using standard 8.5 x 11 paper on borderless, because then the insert isn't wide enough. But if I use legal paper, I'm going to have to photoshop the inserts to have wider spines, or else the paper is going to spill out the edges of the case sleeve.

It's not a big deal since I didn't pay much for them (99ยข each plus shipping), but still, their worth to me hangs in a bit of doubt since using them would defeat the purpose of having a universal packaging standard for my Nintendo games. I just thought I'd give everyone a heads up, since black cases appear to be a bit rarer, and I don't think most people would expect them to have different dimensions.

Weird...

Maybe those aren't "original" UGCs?

Mediashelving for example hasn't got the black UGCs anymore....
2 + 3 = 23

They're both "Protect Game" brand, and their internal layout is identical on both case types. My guess is that the black cases are an older model, and the company behind "Protect Game" made the newer versions slimmer at the request of rentals. A slimmer case, after all, means that you can fit more on the shelf, and also the slim ones are much easier to print up inserts for (as I discovered) since they fit on standard 8.5 x 11 paper. Also, the clear cases may have been preferable to some renters for security reasons.

Basically, my guess is that the black cases are older, which makes them "1.0," wherase the clear ones are "2.0." The older cases aren't bad in terms of their construction. The black plastic looks cool, and the thicker spine reminds me almost of a mini version of the "shock boxes" that people use for Neo Geo games. However, they're certainly not very convinient if your goal is consistent casing that's easy to print inserts for, which is why I opted to pick up more clear cases. I don't plan on returning the black cases since they may be handy in the future if I pick up any non-Sega or Nintendo retro systems, but for my Nintendo games, I'd prefer to stick with the clear UGCs, and for Sega Genesis / MD, I'd prefer to stick with the official ones (of which I have plenty).

if I were you I would just use them for a system you only have about 15 games for, that way it is consistant for that console at least.

Yeah, that's what I've been thinking. Oddly enough, I still don't own an Atari after all these years, and I suppose if I ever pick one up these cases would be a good option for the games.
