I believe Link to the Past is still the first game in the series according to the chronology.

Play it first. It's the best anyway :P

That sounds like a great idea. Are there any other outstanding LttP hacks I can check out? Also, if I wanted to get this game in cartridge format, would you suggest a specific one? There appear to be a few different types.

I gave WW another chance, and at the moment, I am to the Tower of the Gods. This game goes by surprisingly quickly if you just jump on the linear fast train. Of course by the time I end up fighting Ganon, I'm still going to have like 6 hearts. So to update my thoughts on the game, the beginning is.. no other way to put this.. shit. Once you meet the King of Red Lions, the game opens up and feels much more like Zelda. The dungeons are extremely linear but overall enjoyable. The bosses actually pack a bit of a punch -- which is nice. The game's combat (excluding bosses) seems very uninspired and dull. The combat is obviously catered towards the infantile and the inept. In light of that, the music is FANTASTIC. As I said before, the graphical style is not my taste, but it isn't without its charm (I much prefer the slightly less cartoony WW HD). I assumed I would hate the sailing, but instead I only find it slightly inconvenient. As a concept, it was well executed, and I believe if it is compared to the travel in other Zelda games, it is fairly balanced.

To summarize, this game as an independent entity is quite a decent (dare I say, good) game. However its very poor combat and linearity to the level of a platformer definitely don't rank it high on my Zelda list. At the moment I am playing on the GameCube, but I could see myself revisiting this game in the form of the graphically (IMO) improved WW HD. I may just have to drink a bit before I'm ready to suffer the beginning again.

I think all are the same.
Just make sure that region is correct (US, JPN or PAL)
Mind you that there are 2 similar sounding games:
Paraller Worlds = Extremely difficult, but great player can beat it.
Paraller Worlds Redone = Normal difficulty, most dickish parts made easier (puzzles dungeons).
Both have sort of quest 2 where game starts normal but then goes to super dungeon.

As for other hacks I think Ancient Stone Tablets is the only othersomewhat complete, altough there are few in making.
Zeldix site has some info on those.

Do you own a physical copy of ALttP PW Remodel? I'd only be interested in playing it in physical form, but before I purchase one, I would like to be sure I'm getting a quality repro.

So it has been about a week since I beat Wind Waker. I just wanted to post my final feelings. The artificially game-extending fetch quest at the end was awfully boring. But I was playing the original WW. They did reduce that quest significantly in WWHD, so that is good. The shadow ganon puzzle in ganon's tower was phenomenal. Interestingly enough, when I first started playing this game (pre-King of Red Lions), I truly thought it was awful. And I still believe that the beginning could have been much more refined. And of course, the linearity of the majority of the game was pretty dreary. BUT, interestingly enough, just a week later, I already have fond memories of the game. At first I sort of hated the art style. But now, in a way, I appreciate it. I am still a bigger fan of OoT's art style, but nevertheless, I have a fondness of Wind Waker now. I just wanted to post this to say that the game really is great. It still isn't my favorite, but I am glad I gave it another chance.

Side note: One thing that really made the game more enjoyable for me was heavily exploring. Without exploring, and just focusing on the plot, the game felt like a platformer, but when I added exploring, it did feel like a Zelda.

That's funny, the triforce shard hunt was my favourite part of the game because you actually had to explore the entire world to do it. I guess casual players or people with low attention span wouldn't be hugely into it though. Collecting figurines of every character/enemy in the game was fun for me as well. I don't get the linearity complaints though, it's less linear than all other 3D zelda games to date. There's plenty of places to go, you can drop in at windfall island and do something new there so often it's not even funny.

Honestly i think it had the best sense of exploration of any 3D zelda game so far. Clearly breath of the wild will be even more along those lines.

I am actually far from a casual Zelda player. Obviously a lot of people love Zelda, but we don't all love it for the same reason. You may enjoy the thorough, labor-intensive tasks, but I personally don't.

Also, you're confusing "sense of exploration" and linearity. The exploration is not linear. Like you said, there is always something new to find or a new island which is accessible. I thought the exploration was great, but the plot was linear. The dungeons were extremely linear -- I don't think anyone would argue that.

Furthermore, I am not saying this is any more linear than recent 3D Zeldas. I have the same beef with them too. I'm actually a much bigger fan of 2D Zeldas due to their inherent non-linearity.

Casual and attention span have nothing to do with it.  I am a hardcore Zelda fan and can spend days doing tedious, repetitive tasks in games.  Hell, I farm EXP for days in some RPGs.
The triforce hunt is BORING.  At least in my opinion.  And unlike other games that may have optional repetitive tasks, this game made it mandatory.  That's the difference.  If I choose to farm EXP for hours so I stroll in to dungeon 2 at level 37 and one hit KO everything, that's my choice.  But in order to advance in this you had to sail (which I loathe) and search...and search...it was awful.  I didn't like the sailing mechanics or the island system, and even though Hyrule field can be a little empty sometimes, at least it's easy to maneuver.
Anyway I'm getting off point.  If a game is going to have lots of fetch quests or tedious things to do - make them optional to some degree.  But when it's mandatpry to complete the game, it just feels stretched out and forced.
