ITunes and Macbook questions

update for those interested...
using a free program called sharepod i was successfully able to back up my iPod to iTunes, total songs after this part 1962, then because the cd drive was dead, (of course...) , i had to hook up an external drive to transfer the music i'd bought since the last update, having done that successfully total songs were 2083, then i thought, "y'know what, i should really do a purge, get rid of the songs i hate/don't really listen to..." ended up deleting nearly 500 songs! final total at the point of re-syncing 1591.
lets keep the thread open, sometimes i don't like googling for answers...

The other option is just to instal and older than dirt version of iTunes. I have 6.0 or something like that on my PC. Back when you could just drag and drop item in and out of your iPod :)
