I came back to my home town for the holidays. *it still surprises me that an average sized city in upstate NY has 7 quality local game stores, when San Diego has all of 2*
I was at one of the smaller locations, checking out, when one of the managers brought out a stack of NES Classic Editions. Apparently they just came in today, an hour or so before I visited. Now I wasn't really going to grab one of these at a high price, seeing as I have 25 of the 30 games in physical form. But I couldn't resist.
I got all of this for about $100 before tax.
The Bahamut Lagoon repro is nice because (unlike my clock tower and a few other repros I have) this one actually works with the retron 5. Forgotten Worlds was a nice grab for $2, and Spawn is a terrible game, but this copy is mint, and the lenticular cover is stunning. All in all, a nice day. I hope my other stops this week are as fruitful.

Ended up getting a lot of "Defective" Game systems on Ebay. Listed as not working, what I got was:
About $150 worth of controllers and cables
N64 w/ expansion pak - Working
SNES - Working
3x Genesis - Working
NES - Working
PS One - WOrking, but makes clicking sound
PS2 - Fat - Working but loud
Ended up painting two Genesis to try and resell, also picked up Toy Story on SNES, crappy condition, but still a decent game I remember playing way back when. Also did a LED mod on the Genesis, Blue for the Sonic themed one, Yellow for the batman.

I can tell you a bit about retron 5 compatibility. It's MUCH less about the game itself as it is the way the game was made. I.e. The board it's on. Most games on an original SNES donor board will work, even if the game on that board isn't in the database. Boards from Infinite NES lives are 0% compatible with the retron 5. It's not about the quality of those boards, but rather the way that they're configured. I've seen some people make adapter boards which allow for the use of 27C322 EPROMs with a donor board. I'm not 100% sure of the compatibility with such a board. I've only ever had one in my procession, and I don't even know where it is at this point. None of the multi game board configurations that I've ever used get along with the Retron 5. They require either a power cycle (reset) or on-screen menu in order to switch between ROMs, neither of which are compatible with the R5.
Basically, R5 compatibility is a toss-up, unless you know exactly what's inside and whether that configuration has actually been tested on the R5 or not.
