Retro Game Treasure Subscription Service?

I heard about this not long ago, and wanted to check if anyone here had tried it before. I've never been into the "unknown box" thing, but since I don't drive and my area has no buses, getting anywhere is a real pain. My sister runs a company out of her home, which takes up 90% of her time.

Anyway, this particular subscription is called Retro Game Treasure, and it basically works like this: you give them about $40 a month, and they send anywhere from 3 to 5 video games directly to your door. You can update your collection on their website to avoid duplicates, and change your interests at any point. Each box ships out in the third week of a given month, and they offer plans from one-offs to a whole year at once.

I have to admit, this looks interesting...but I don't want to get ripped off, either. What do you all think?

Well. First off, you have to remember they are trying to make money out of it.
They are paying for the games, staff to clean and test them, hardware to play test on, plus shipping materials etc.

It's unlikely that your box is going to be worth the amount you pay for it every month.  You will probably get lucky every now and then.  It depends what you want out of it as to whether it's worth it to you.  Do you just want to fill out your collection with random games which would be a nice surprise every month, or do you hope to pick up rare/semi rare titles each time. Because the latter is unlikely.

I'm not really a "collector", in the traditional sense of buying everything for its own sake. My main goal is to find the games I loved growing up, and experience a few I never did in the process. The only rarities I'd hope to get are still fairly common, like the last two "Mega Man" games for the NES or "Battletoads in Battlemaniacs" for the SNES. If I get duplicates or titles I have no interest in, I can always resell them or use them as trade bait. My main worry is paying $40 a month for a retail value of $15 on a regular basis. I also found a similar offer called Old School Crate, that offers plans up to $70 a month for ten games.

It almost sounds to me that you might be interested just for the convenience of getting the stuff in the mail since you don't have a lot of options for going out and buying games.  While there is nothing wrong with that, I think you would be better off just ordering what you want through eBay or Amazon.  That way you know what you are getting and what you are paying for it.  Like Sheep said, it's unlikely you are going to be getting games through this service that are more valuable than what you are paying.  I think they are just banking on the fact that people can hope and wish for that.

With that being said, if you try it out, let us know what your experience is like.
