Not sure if cost will be a factor for you but I would recommend an HP Printer (I have the Envy 5660) and then do HP's Instant Ink program.  It is great and super cheap.  Printer is not the highest quality but the covers I have printed for UGC's look great.  As far as paper Legal size Photo paper is great but expensive.  I usually just use letter size photo paper.  Kodak has 100 sheets for $15-$20 at Target usually.

To be clear I am a newbie as well but for me cost is an important factor. I know there could be better quality but I am happy with what I have.

ah thank you, i have an hp 4550 but its quality is very low, was looking for a printer with higher quality, price isnt really a problem as long as its not a 1k printer 200-300$ is fine.

would this be a good printer?

I also am pretty new to this cover stuff. I also use the HP ENVY 5660 with the instant ink. I use the red river double sided matte legal paper. The results are very good, and im happy with how they look on the shelf.

I've used a variety of Cannon and HP printers - Canon (for me at least) have always given better results.

I currently use a Canon Pixma - and am extremely happy with the results.

If you go with the Cannon, make sure you look into the XL ink cartridges.  Where I live they cost about 50% more than standard ink carts, but they provide 2 to 3 times as many prints, so it costs a lot less per sheet.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

This.

HP printers are garbage in my experience, both in print quality and longevity.
