Pretty much what happens to me.

I do however check to see what the average time to beat a game is.  I generally like playing rpg's above other genre's but I do like to switch it up so I don't get burned out.

Just recently I finished Xenoblade Chronicles X and right after that I killed a few short games from my backlog (Infamous Second son, Until Dawn, Order 1886, Killzone Shadowfall...all very short games) and went into The Last Story.

Right now I also got into Kingdom Hearts Unchained on mobile and it's putting me in the mood to actually get back into the series.  (I actually own all of the games but only played and beat the first KH)

I can't wait til my son is a bit older and I can get a few minutes to breath here and there. I love him to death, but he does NOT sit still for more than a minute, and like his daddy, he tinkers, which means getting hurt if I'm not on him like flies on crap.  Dying to play a game that actually requires some thought and lasts more than 1-2 hours lol!

Give him game controller and put on some nice video and let him believe he is playing. ;)

We've "played" a couple of monster truck games and Mario kart 8 so far.  He's definitely not there yet, but enjoys watching it for a bit (he has about as much patience as his mother and I both, which is virtually none).

My son would get into a lot of trouble if I didn't keep an eye on him as well.

What I find interesting is that he can pick up any standard controller and he already knows how to hold it.  I never showed him how to.  It's just that most controllers have such a natural feeling to them that even a 2 year old who has never played video games can pick one up and hold it correctly.  Of course, the exception to that is the Nintendo Wii Remote.  Whenever he picks one up, he hold it up to his ear like a phone.  That's Nintendo design for you. :P

@Larfleeze: interesting method you have there, I like it!

Anyway, how do I choose?,  semi-randomly, for example I went to see Batman vs Superman, then started to replay the Arkham series. Other times I'll look through the shelves and think 'i haven't played that in ages!' hook it up and give it a go.

Lol my nephew is the same way...brother in law gives him an old 360 controller to hold and he will try to get in a couple matches in fifa.  Needless to say the kid doesn't stay put toon long then gets mad when paw patrol or bubble guppies isn't playing 24/7.

But yeah, I wish I had the time and energy to play like I used too...I end up buying a lot more then I ever play in the hopes that I can get just a bit more time.  At this rate though it won't happen until after I retire :/
