Hello all,

A bit of a hit and hope one here but I am in a rather excruciating situation right now after spending my entire youth and adult life wanting to find some way of owning an AES without spending crazy money on one (23 years its taken.....Im a patient fella! ;-) ) and I have finally managed to get hold of one recently at a convention!!!........but.....it wont power on!!  :(

So, after a 2 week wait (after getting the console and 2 sticks) for the official PSU I bought from a very reputable site (console passion.co.uk), I was devastated to find that it did not work.

There is so little information around the tinerwebs but I signed up to Neo-Geo.com thinking obviously that these guys could give me some advice but after a 3 day wait to be approved as a member, only to find I cannot create new threads or PM members'admins......so I just posted my issue in a general repair thread but a week has passed without reply.

So again, I am getting desperate now.......hence my call to the old faithful friends of the cover project!!

Any and all advice would be very much appreciated and the key really is that I am hoping and slightly suspecting from the limited amount of info I can find, that the PSU may be the wrong one.

For those of you who may be able to clarify this, here are the details of my console and PSU =

NEO GEO
MODEL No. NEO-AEC
RATING 8W
USE PRO-POW AC ADAPTER ONLY
SERIAL No 011967

And on the PSU there is =

PRO-POW-E
AC ADAPTER
INPUT 50/60Hz 38VA
110V/120V/220V/240V
OUTPUT 10V = 1A

And there is a dial on the PSU that is set to 240V right now.

Any thoughts on whether my suspicion that it is not quite right are true? or am I staring down the barrel of a blow console?  :( :( :(

From my experience, once you finally find something you've been searching after for a long time, you tend to start tripping over them going forward.  In other words, now that you have one, you will probably start seeing them everywhere.  :P
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

Ha ha!!! Man, that happens to me ALL the damned time.......like if I finally bite the bullet and buy something online for a price I wasnt exactly happy with, then it arrives in my lap for a quarter of that price soon after!!

Buuuuuuuuuut............Neo Geo AES??? I tell you what, if I end up getting another for a bargain in the next month........I will give it to you for FREE!! That is how confident I am I wont.

Simple fact = In those 23 years of being aware of the its existence, I had literally never been in the presence of an AES until one arrived on my doorstep the other week, I had been looking for one every one of those 8395 days!  :D

Double quoted.....I didn't amend it.....honest. Lol.

Have you tried twisting the voltage dial on the PSU - could be not quite sitting in position.  Turn it all the way in one direction, and then back to 240.

If that, or any other suggestion works then the next one SHALL be yours!  :P

Check out Jamma-Nation-X.com, James is a well respected member of the NG community (Xian Xi) and has many tutorials.

Off the top of my head, I do believe there's two different types of official power adapters, which may be your problem.

Thanks jfresh and Kalessin.

Watched that video jfresh, sounds like a very knowledgeable guy, nothing in the video that can help me right now (especially as that board looks like a later model one so has a quite different layout) but I may try to contact him through his channel, so cheers for that.

Kalessin, as for the James fella........perhaps that is a sign!! as I am a James too! Will check him out tomorrow to see if I can get anywhere there.

I have now tried Sheep's suggestion of messing with the voltage dial, to no avail unfortunately......I gave it a good old turn all round, then firmly back to the 240v......but nothing still.

I also just spent the better part of the last hour taking my old girl on a date with some 100% alcohol........she cleaned up well but still was not putting out.

She is a cruel mistress right now......I NEED to tame her!!!!  >:(

^^ i can relate, in a way...
and considering commodore machines were used at one point to code as a general of the day, there's a connection to the era. :D
...
as it happens, i really want my a1200 back up to production grade spec, just missing a vital hardware upgrade card (DMA based) that quads the machine cpu at least (with a floating point unit) and 128m ram upgradeable.
some cards have ide channels as extra, but i'll be happy with any of the ati/piccolo range.
there is a line, and it doesn't appear realistic in my realm, not even a cd-32 with sx-32 combo is around, and that would come a little closer as the hardware interior is virtually the same, bar some minor differences and limitations vs the full a1200 computer.
...
all the best, but don't get raped just because it's 'progear'...
don't get me wrong, SNK got the cops market (for it's time) cornered, still does, but is it worth going beyond the line of duty for?
my LTD dreamcast (black/blue) with matching shit is up for grabs, along with it's POS retails, all complete. (101)
...
right?!
chances of me getting my own titsd-out machine back into an ams-neve studio again as as likely as lady spencer getting exumed, waking up and spilling the beans on who killed her. :(
[edit]
post small tight keys... >:(

Have you had a read through this thread?
http://www.neo-geo.com/forums/showthread.php?178030-Question-on-Neo-Geo-AES-power-supply/page2

If your system says to only use the pro-pow adapter, then it looks like it's the older board, requiring 5v @ 3amps.  Stop trying to use the 10v adapter, and hope that nothing is fried.
