Hey all,

I thought of a discussion topic that might be a little bit fun. I've been dating my girlfriend now for quite a long time and I think we'll have some time to sit down and play some games together. I really want to introduce her to RPGs since they've been a huge part of my life growing up. So many memories haha.

Anyway, she's not a gamer in the slightest. She played Crash Bandicoot as a kid (... and dominates me in Crash Team Racing) but she's never played an RPG before. So I've tried to come up with a few options of what might really catch her attention. I've thought of the classics like FF6, Chrono Trigger and even FF7 and 8 but I feel like the graphics may get in the way for the time being.

I'm considering picking up a PS4 in the near future and thought perhaps the remaster of FFX would make a really good start. The battle system is fairly simplistic. the story is fantastic, albeit a bit confusing I suppose, and the music is great. I guess I've pretty much convinced myself that this is the starting point haha.

But I'm wondering if you had any first choices or recommendations or if you've been in my position and what was the first game you introduced a significant other to?

First RPG that I ever played through was FF2/4. 'Twas a good introduction to RPG games for me...

Link to the past -> Sould Blazer -> Illusion of Gaia -> Secret of Mana -> Final Fantasy 6 is the path I would take on SNES.

read the subject, and i'm seeing no margin for allowance, (2up/coop) so:
1, ff12.
2, valkyrie profile 2.
3, star ocean 4.
...
i can't recommend games for the present generation, avoiding it like a tax invoice.
...
some 1UP action.
1, ff7-8-9.
2, dirge of ceberus. (aside: the E.A.S. omaga class heavy destroyer was one of the first off the assembly line after the earth-minbari war.. the cerberus met an untimely fate when she was ripped apart by a quantum fissure generated by a shadow hybrid-destroyer. CPT john sheridan was the only surviving witness to the to recall the incident. E.F.N.I and allies are extremely concerned with future incursions, as the level of technology is only matched by the vorlons, and the first ones.)
3, ff10 and 10-2.
that'll do for now.  ;D

I would actually recommend Pokémon. It's a good start for those who want to get into Turn Based RPGs and depending on how old she is she may have a connection with the franchise.

  • Think off-center.
I say don't be hesitant about Chrono Trigger. Made a lot of fans of the game by people just watching me play it and the battle system it self is easy to get.

(a  few more dreamcast raws sent to the relative directory on the raw scan subject.)
xenoblade chronicles and pandora's tower are pretty good, minus the extremely LOCAL and BAD (missing teeth stereotype) english accents... :P
xenoblade does allow for japanese vox as an option.
...
oh, jade cocoon 1 & 2 for an RPG in the creature/MENGLE department.
...
screw that, baten kaitos (both games) and lost kingdoms (both games) are pretty damn good for RPG/card battlers.  ;D

I think this is a good one to start with as well. Not too "boyish", as in it isn't full of explosions, giant robots, war-driven plot, and so on. Very accessible plot and battle system, with beyond excellent soundtrack and graphics (if you're talking by comparison to other games of that generation).
