Well what do you guys think

Otherwise what's the point of collecting something?
If he wants to sell them for $50 a pop that's on him, but I'll tell you right now that if collecting games shouldn't hold value, most of us wouldn't collect them. I collect because I enjoy playing the games I do collect AND because they have a value on them. I wouldn't collect them if they didn't have a value.
Then the other guy that says he would ruin the collector if he ever put them in the market is a moronic ass hat. Simple as that. If he put his case on the market, the price would NOT substantially decrease. People would still want them for collectible "value" o them.
Example: Corvettes are worth more than thier weight in produced iron. But there aren't as many out there as people like to think there are. To every parking lot that has a Vette in it, there is prolly 10-20 Chevy Impalas there. So rarity adds value. Well around 10 years ago or so, there was a warehouse with around 100 Vettes in it. Did that bring down the price value of the Vette? Absolutely not.
For anyone to threaten someone else over anything than trying to protect someone's well being is just a pussy.
I personally have been collecting games since I was around 5 years old, more specifically, since 1991. Back then it was hard to do that because I was so young. But all the new games I got I always kept the box, even when I found used games with the box I kept those too, just because I felt they had a value. So luckily I was a smart early 90's collector.
Sadly, when I was getting a divorce, I think she threw away about 1/3 of my boxes because I lost about 1/4 of my NES boxes, just a couple SNES boxes, and all of my Gameboy and Game Gear boxes...

The Question is would you rather bay $10,000 for a Sealed Stadium Events or $2000
palmer6strings:
Honestly, Neither. I only really collect games I like and want to play. The ONLY reason I buy expensive collectible games that I'm not into is because I find them on the extreme cheap.
Example: Cool Ball is worth $80-90 last I checked. I got it and a pink GBA SP for $1. Would I have bought it for even $30 by itself? No. The game kinda sucks lol
Just as an FYI, I'm not trying to be rude about the opinion, I'm just stern with my opinion. Hell, I can do quite a bit of cool shit with $2k other than buying a game I don't want.
;D
Edit: Well, I just checked the price for Cool Ball, The price has dropped to around $40 cart only, but I still wouldn't buy it for that much.

I don't collect because of the value. Not at all.
Some things I collect because I genuinely want to play them (some day), while other items are just interesting to me for one reason or another (which explains my current obsession with game hardware).
I can't recall ever purchasing anything as a financial investment, gaming-wise. But I do understand why so many do. Making money simply by placing into a financial institution simply isn't possible anymore. It only guarantees that it will LOSE value, so people are investing in commodities a lot more it would seem.
One thing I'd definitely like to add, there are a LOT of guys out there with insane, I mean fucking insane collections that would make these guys who "hold records" and whatnot cry like little girls. I've met some of them and seen some bits and pieces of their collections. These are the guys who don't typically spend time chatting on forums and showing off pictures, though most of them are VERY aware of what's happening on the big forums (they are collectors, and many of the forums are good places to source desirable items).
It always amuses me when people on NA and other such places are insistent and would swear on a bible that X game is sooooooo rare simply because of their own personal experience shopping for said game or game-related item. What they fail to realize is that the market is much larger than what the Internet will reveal with a Google search or is available at their local flea markets. Are you in the market for a Ferarri F40? Probably not. So why would you think you'd know where to buy one?

Seraph Man:
I've always been of the camp that collects things because it holds value to me. Sure, I have things I've never opened that are part of my collection. But I got them because I wanted to own it, not because it's rare or because I can resell, or any other reason. I have no interest in things like Stadium Events or any of that. Now, if I were a collector of Sports games or Olympic games memorabilia, then I would be more interested. But even then, I'm not a CIB guy, or a Variant guy. One copy of something is good enough for me, and in terms of video games, I'm going to open that copy and I'm going to play it. That's why I got it; so I can enjoy the medium.
I also don't try to brag about my collection. My collection is there for me. I may show it off because I love sharing my passion, but I know my collection is puny. And even if it weren't, even if I had (in my case) a collection to rival Forte or even surpass him, I wouldn't brag. I would, and do, admire his collection as someone who shares an interest in collecting, and more specifically collecting the same thing. I collect for me, not for attention.
