By pure coincidence, I just happened to be on NA about two minutes after the picture of the Stadium Events box was pictured.  I had a chance to see it before Tim's website crashed from so many people clicking on it at once.  It was an interesting thread to follow (which is both good and bad).

With that said, I pretty much agree with what Wiggy said.  I don't collect for the value.  With certain exceptions, I try to limit my self to a set amount of money on a monthly basis.  If the bubble burst and the value of my collection along with all other games suddenly dropped, I wouldn't care.  The only thing that would change, is that I could buy more stuff with my monthly limit.  I buy games because I enjoy playing them and collecting them.  Both provide a much needed stress relief.  If others collect for different reasons (including for financial gain) then more power to them.  I personally couldn't care.  I just get a good chuckle when others tell me that if games were worthless, I wouldn't collect them anymore.

something else I would like to add to this conversation, what do you guys think when people buy prototype games and sells them on for a high price and doesn't say maybe get the rom dumped so others can't play it, it makes sense in a Money making way but not in the Love of gaming way

Well, that can be a tricky one, for sure.

For instance, I paid for the Shadowhawk prototype cart, yet never received anything but the original ROM and one that had some bugs worked out (which was done as per the previous owner, at his expense).  So the guy who I was to receive the actual Porto cart from still has it in his possession, and we've long since had a nasty falling out.  i will  never dump it as per an agreement with the copyright holder of the IP on which the game is based. I'm pretty sure the guy with the original PCB won't ever dump it, and it's not super likely that any of my customers who purchased the game will either, especially since said copyright owner has made very clear his intentions to press charges against anyone who resells their copy purchased from us, distributed the game for profit or in a way which allows it to be accessed freely, as well as anyone hosting it via any sort of online database/cloud storage/etc.

Luckily there are plenty people in possession of it, so it's not going to just go poof.


Also, the people who pay for those prototypes often pay a high sum of money. By dumping the ROM on to the web, the prototype is likely to lose a LOT of value.  Why give away something for free, especially if it cost you a considerable amount of money?  Sure, it's a nice gesture when someone does do that for free, but to expect it because it's "good for the community", that it "need to be preserved", or something similar to that is typically saying so for rather selfish reasons in my experience, rather than actual preservation. Preservation doesn't require that it be spread around the web, despite what Pat and his buddy might think.

True, but saying that though Wiggy, Earthbound is out on the web but you feel the need to buy a $150 game when you can get it for free, you kinda see my point, the ROM may exist but to have the physical copy is like WOAH, same with a Nintendo Championship Cart, the ROM is on the internet for free but people will still want the physical release and be like WOAH I HAVE A NCC! I may not be as obnoxious as Pat and whats his name but I firmly believe that you should atleast preserve the ROM

i've been (armchair assassin) threatened for doing what i do, which is sharing what i paid for out of my money.
no fuckers else biz, BUT it was a a share that had to be seen, and i'm ALL up for argue and rebut, freedom of speech/expression.
still, sites call the shots in the end, so..
folks are free to agree or disagree whatever the outcome.
my own philosophy is very straight-forward, because it's good to give back. 
1, my shit, i can do wtf.
2, by my own code, share it freely, for i KNOW what it's like to have nothing, and there's a line to what should be paid, but that's just me.
3, i have my own outlook on jockstrap wearers, and they simply don't carry weight with me. if they put their own version of 'time' FREELY OF OWN VOLITION MAGICKED UP OFF OWN SKULL, into the REAL gaming community, i'll take note.

4, i can handle my own, part of internet hazards, but i also have respect from the other side, due to my efforts. (blowing own trumpet. folks won't thanks, they just suck shit up like a black hole and bitch if it doesn't dl/work for em, public sites i'm referring to. private is where the real folks play, and SAY!  )
5, in conclusion, there's no pleasing everyone, least of all a few.
fuck em, if you bought/got it given (accounting for agreements in lieu of trade) then do what you will with it.
seriously, no matter where you go, it'll rub some up the wrong way, and they ARE free to express/rebut, vice-versa.
the value of the item (if genuine) won't lose it's value, EVER (whatever that means) because of the obvious fact it's no longer produced OEM.

some folks are just shit, and won't dump it for others less fortunate (i don't use emulators, but i am chuffed they exist) but i can understand their viewpoint.
and just because i can, doesn't mean i';m alined to it, i answer to nobody when it my own shit, but i MAY grace the with the courtesy of clarity, an explanation to clear the air
