So I bought Donkey Kong 64 on Wii U Virtual Console 90% because of the arcade game in there. I never liked the 64 game itself too much. I haven't played it since it first came out on N64, so.I don't really remember anything.

What is the bare minimum of DK 64 I can play to unlock the arcade game? Can I just go to the level (factory?) that has the arcade machine and bypass everything else? I'm guessing not. Really wish Wii U had a way to share game saves.

Yes I already checked gamefaqs. They don't have specifically what I'm looking for. I mean they say how to unlock it, but not if I can skip other stuff.

usually, when i ask a question, state ALL angles i've taken to the point of failure, so folks don't give you back what you may already know? (wasting both sides of time) but what do i know?
...
i don't think so, if it wasn't clarified in any of those docs (i couldn't find, or search was bs? touche it seems?) and if there was a way to skip all to get the 8-bit game unlocked, there wouldn't be references to 'users not knowing about the hidden gem' and 'that golden banana was the hardest to find so i could get DK arcade unlocked' sorta thing.
...
another option would to go deep to a rom hack site, and ask for 'bizzed/edited save/sram/eeprom file if using emulators or spoofer cartridges.
for the retail legit game, play it through, it's a classic anyway. (zophars domain and 7sins maybe?)
all the best.  :P

I tried looking for Gameshark codes that would allow for the game to be unlocked immediately, but I couldn't find anything.  I doubt that it would have helped you anyway, since you are playing on the virtual console.

The suggestion about finding a ROM hack is a really good idea, but again, I don't think it would work with the Wii U.  I might try it out on my Everdrive this weekend and if I find something, I'll let you know.

Just out of curiosity, are you doing this because the DK64 arcade game is supposed to be the closest to arcade perfect?  Obviously there are many other ways to play the original DK arcade, but I don't believe many, if any, are exactly the same as the original arcade.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

Yeah, it's closest to the arcade and I just want to play it on Wii U. I used to work in a used game store and I copied a completed save from a used cartridge we had there using a GameShark, but like I said, I just wanna play the arcade game on my Wii U/ GamePad.

I've always thought it's crazy that Nintendo has never released a direct arcade port of DK, considering it's the game that put Nintendo on the map and introduced two of it's most famous characters.

I think I remember reading somewhere that Nintendo outsourced the coding of the original arcade game, and because of that, Nintendo doesn't actually own the code to the arcade game, even though they own the game itself.

It's too bad, because the NES port, which is what Nintendo always re-releases, is missing an entire level and is far from arcade perfect.  DK Junior is a much better port.

As for me, I play the arcade version on CoinOps on my Xbox.  Hope you find a way to play the DK64 version - playing on a WiiU game pad would be pretty sweet.
