I hate it when I get hardcore into a game. When you like the story and characters and then as you get closer to the end, shit doesn't make as much sense as it should then BAM!! The ending is a total let down.

I just played through Crimson Gem Saga and the ending was a little bit better than bad... So many things left hanging that you really have no idea about...

Anyone else in that same predicament with any games?
What are you looking at? You think baby's don't like video games? THEN YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT BABIES!!

K.O.T.O.R. II...man, that was a let down.  I was actually enjoying it, too.,  I mean, it wasn't the first Knights of the Old Republic, but it was a solid follow up...then that ending.  Right outta left field, no real connection, just a rushed product to meet the holiday deadline.

there's a few i can think of, but of a trilogy that leaves it's scorch mark on me, the third ps3 installment was a cold shower on the ending. ???
ar tonelico 3/qoga knell of ar ciel.
call it what you will, great game, just fails on the ending.
it DOES have multiple endings, but has to be played through, and ps3 dlc archives add a bit extra as a side quest.
the run up pissed me off, and like you said, BANG (in the fuckin gems. unannounced.)
it's one of those games you can do well in areas, get absolutely PASTED to shit in others, not even deep into the games.
a bloody 'poker face' playthrough, if that makes any sense?! :P
due to this, i was expecting FAR more 'game' for the size of the bdrom image (iso, over 20g unaltered) as well.
just, it has it all, awesome (GUILTY WEEBOO) story and gameplay, though it IS gimped in a few insignificant ways vs it's ps2 predecessors.
expect the end to creep up behind you, and wrap a ten kilogram lump hammer to the skull. (no spoilers from me.) ;D
...
i wont get into others.
in fairness to the subject, it's been mostly RPG's (in my experience) of some description that throws 'screw fast, shoot shit quick, roll over, go to sleep' endings.
not many, but enough that reminds me why i live alone, and remain grateful of that.  ;D

"Sir, finishing this fight"

BOOM! end credits!

i was expecting at least 1 more level, but nooo, Bungie was like "you cant have any more 'til halo 3, ya bastard!"

I wondered for all of 3 seconds how long it'd take before ME3 was mentioned.

To add to the list, Sonic Chronicles had a terrible ending, but then again the game overall was meh.

Assassin's Creed 3 and Destiny come to mind too.

Then there are plenty of games with multiple endings, and many are just garbage. I remember getting the bad ending in Far Cry 4, and all the endings in the Colony Wars games.

Ya me neither, I LOVED all 3 games and those ending, (even after the fix) depressed me for a while. It was a total let down.

This is my favorite game series of all time, and was my gut reaction to this question, too.  But the patched ending at least offered some closure.  I don't love it, but after all the DLC like Leviathan, which added to the story, and playing the CItadel mission, it kind of felt like a Tarantino movie.  Out of order at parts, but satisfying in the end (the end being that 'farewell' to the characters in the Citadel missions)

It's driving me nuts, but I don't want to derail the thread over some butt hurt about a game that's 4 years old now. Suffice it to say, I have a lot of problems with the Mass Effect series, especially 3, and especially the ending. I may never be able to get over it.

Okay, so I have a question: was the ending really that bad?

I remember growing up and hearing everyone talk about Mass Effect and how great it was, but I wasn't able to play it because I didn't have an Xbox 360 or PS3. When I finally got one, Mass Effect 3 had been out for about a month, and all I heard about from my friends was how the game destroyed the series...and all I could read about online were articles about how the game had ruined literally everything. In the end, I ended up not buying Mass Effect, and I haven't touched the series since everyone says the ending is terrible.

But does it really ruin the entire series like I've heard?

On topic now, I'm going to have to say that Xenoblade Chronicles X's ending really disappointed me. It makes the game feel unfinished, which might not be so bad if we had any indication that a sequel was forthcoming.

The game is actually really good. But the ending is pretty bad. The best one IMO is 2. But they are all really good games.
Another thing about 3 I didn't really like was the quest menu. It was soooooooooooo vague. Example:

There is this thing you need to find. It somewhere out there.

retro time, as the subject isn't specific to any timeline.  ;D
kid chameleon on the megadrive.
true, the only story is some text at the start, and in the user manual, but for a parallax scrolling platformer game of that size and scale (with fuck knows how many alt routes/bonus levels via telepads) i was SERIOUSLY expecting a monolith of text for an ending.
all it was were...some text...
that game will be my troll recommendation to burn a fucktonne of time away (with ZERO save capacity, true style) with the equal effect of an infirmed old man blowing his wad, and it amounts to a poof of sawdust, a complete anti climax.  ???  >:(
...
hey, just because it's old, doesn't mean any less effort was put into it.
shooter on coin ops wre the same, bang at least a two hour run on one coin, tooled up to the nines, wipe out all in your way, then enter name for highscore, NO outro.  >:(
...
two cops games dodge that though, thunder cross 2 (no skip, it's committed) and xexex.
yep, kick back and feel the g's!  ;D (max power and trent steele don't consult anybody.)

corrected.

Okay, so I have a question: was the ending really that bad? [...] does it really ruin the entire series like I've heard?

Alright, I'll try to hold back.

The first Mass Effect game is wonderful. It does such a great job at world building that it will leave you wanting more. Yeah, it's by no means perfect. The combat doesn't measure up to traditional first- or third-person shooters, the items menu was horribly unorganized, and assets were overused, but overall it's a great game.

Then Mass Effect 2 came out. Combat was refined, but the RPG elements took a hit, unique elements were removed or changed, and they attempted to fix problems in such a way that made things worse. The items menu (where you hold weapon upgrades) is a mess? Okay, eliminate weapon upgrades. Some people didn't like the driving segments with the Mako? Replace it with planet scanning. The RPG elements look overwhelming? Dumb it down. On top of that, the main story takes a back seat to several smaller character stories that are great for character development, but ultimately makes the plot of Mass Effect 2 meaningless. It doesn't deal with the main issue brought forth in ME1.

Finally Mass Effect 3. Combat is again refined so it now resembles a traditional third-person shooter more. Weapon upgrading is back and actually really good, and certain RPG elements are improved from 2. Certain missions, specifically the ones on Tuchanka and Rannoch, are some of the best in the series. But the dialog wheel suffered more detriment here, side missions are an even bigger joke than previously, there were a lot of cut corners, and then there's the ending. The ending failed on so many levels. It introduces a new character and a deus ex machina. There are three distinct choices that determine the end of the game, and each choice is terrible. The entire game has made a point of undermining each of these three choices. All the work you did up until this point means squat, really. There are slight variations in the cut scenes, and one ending can have an additional scene, but ultimately your choices didn't matter, which is important since the series sold itself on your choice mattering.

I won't say Mass Effect is terrible. I actually love Mass Effect. But not blindly. If you want to get into Mass Effect, I won't stop you. Hell, I'd even encourage you. Just keep in mind that while each game brings great things to the table, it will end in such an unsatisfying way, that even now people still are angry with what they were given in the end.

Oh, and the Leviathan DLC was garbage. It explained things, yes, but I was better off never knowing. Oddly enough, the ME3 multiplayer is damn good, and I'd still be playing it now if I had Xbox Live.

Sorry for derailing the thread. Back to topic.

The only reason I wouldn't count those is because I didn't get invested in them story-wise. Otherwise I'd throw Link's Crossbow Training in there. It ended so soon and without a proper final boss.
