TDIRunner:
I've been using CS2 for a few years now. I'm no cover admin, but it's done everything I've ever needed it to do. Definitely worth trying out. I had problems with Gimp. I probably could have figured it out if I gave it more time, but CS2 was so much easier for me, that it didn't matter.
Polygon:
I'm currently using CS6 and it does everything I need it to do save for one thing. It has crappy scanner support so I still use CS2 for that. I never did like Gimp, but that's because I've been using Photoshop almost as long as I've been using computers. I had no idea they were giving it away for free now. That's pretty cool.
wiggy:
Yeah, no twain drivers past CS3 iirc. I use Photoshop CS2 for the very same reason ;)
Oh, and the reason you can get CS2 for free is because Adobe shut down the servers that would authenticate CS2 installs, so anyone with a legit copy would have been screwed if they would need to install it. So they begrudgingly offered what amounts to a cracked version of the suite. It's not easy to find from within Adobe's site search. Lord knows they would rather you lease their newest software for the rest of your life (no thanks Adobe). Super easy to find via Google though :)
