DVD & Game Console to PC Capture Device And Software Advice

So, I don't generally make New Year's resolutions, but this year I've resolved to finally do something I've been thinking of doing for years. I have a pretty large collection of wrestling on DVD that I'd like to streamline and back-up both digitally and on disc.

What I'm looking for is some sort of capture device that can be used with a DVD player to record onto a computer or some good software that can rip DVDs. It would need to be able to do copy-protected DVDs as well. NOT interested in selling copies or anything, just have a lot of store bought discs in the collection that I'd like to back-up and then edit to make custom compilations (like Best Of sets and such). I think I would prefer a capture device that I could also use with a game console as well, in case I ever have need for it. Being able to work with a DVD player is most important now, but I would like to record some things from various games in the future.

Would prefer a capture device with component or HDMI in/out, but would need at least S-Video quality and reliable enough to record without skips or slowdown.

I don't really know much about these things and am a little confused by some of the info I'm seeing in researching online, so I thought I'd ask here in case someone has some experience with such things and could offer some advice on good devices/software or point me in the right direction to a site or three that could explain it a bit better.

Any help would be much appreciated.

TAKE NOTE:
make sure you have a dvd9 capable reader/writer for the disks of that size, or you could get bad dumps/streams. (not all dvd's are dvd9/DL.)
i've not bothered to convert dvd type movies, not my bag.

that's all i can help with, seems the query is directed toward movie conversion as well as recoding.
it's just retail game disk dump (and upload) is my area... :P

1, xbox/360 = xiso/XGD3.
specific disk drive for computers, or xk3y ODE for 360 to get accurate dumps. no other ways to achieve this are known.
2, gamecube= gcm.
iso label. gamecube nw stream or wii disk drive. as with m$, a specific drive is required outside the console. only ngc/wii games dump as intended via their own hardware, unlike BS xbx/360
3, ps2 = iso.
decrypted. can be created on ps2's with harddisks. ordinary computer drives work the same for dvd5's, NOT dvd9's, they have to be dumped to the console directly, and pulled from the harddisk after the fact.

Thanks for the info. I shall have to research further, but it sounds like DVD Encrypter and Imageburn might be all I need... At least to do the wrestling discs.

In case I wasn't too clear about it before, this is basically what I want to do.

DVD (wrestling event) >>> Digital Video File (wrestling event) >>> Edited Digital Video Files (individual matches from previously mentioned wrestling event) >>> Custom DVD Containing Multiple Individual Matches (so instead of having the whole event, I have a collection of only the best matches from various different events).

I've done some video editing and DVD disc creating before, so I'm familiar with that process. Only thing I haven't done is rip the DVDs to the computer initially as my previous work was just audio or videos download from youtube and such.

Being able to hook up to a video game system in the future would be a great bonus that I'd love to have, but not something that's needed right now.

You don't need a capture device for that. ALL DVDs can be ripped with software on a PC. DVD decryptor is probably the best program. If you have a problem with a specific disc, search google with the disc name, like "ripping ---- DVD"

And amiga, I don't think he's trying to copy games (or movies). I think a capture device or stand alone DVD recorder would be necessary for what he's trying to do, capture gameplay/ cut scene footage. For that, ripping the disc wouldn't really be useful, as you'd have all kinds of files now on your PC, that your PC won't necessarily understand.

So for DVDs, rip them to your PC for the best quality/ ease of use.
For gameplay footage from game consoles, use a capture card or DVD recorder.

i gave a possible 'full spectrum' answer.
1, the first link is for gear towards capturing live AV streams of various resolutions/signals and storing them as non-lossy, or converted. (if with betamax/vhs, the gear for the job.)
2, the second link is for a free item towards dumping dvd disks generally speaking, video specific as well as computer/data (and a few console) disks.
once a clean dump is on the computer, OP is able to save/edit it according to their own skills/video editing program.
3, well, that link is for writing a dumped/edited image back to optical disk. ;D
