Now, the price chart doesn't agree with me, but I think they're including a lot of not working consoles. As I recall, old Xboxes were $30 a few years ago. The economy has improved, and we're on the cusp of another generation of gamers finishing college, getting jobs, and being able to afford the consoles they had in their youth. So maybe the Xbox will go up even more.

I shouldn't care, but to me the old Xbox is a really terrible purchase. Almost every notable game has been ported somewhere else. For about the same price you could get an old dual-core computer and add in a GeForce 3 Ti500 -- supposedly that graphics card is comparable to the original Xbox, and a dual core CPU is two major CPU generations better than a Pentium 3, plus has a 2-3 times higher clock rate than the Xbox processor.

It has some homebrew value, but even that is limited. At best you're duplicating the functionality of Steam Big Picture mode with old Xbox games, most of which aren't even worth playing. And the emulators all run on any old computer, and like I said, a $40 computer has a much better processor than a Xbox. I want to do more with my Xbox, and get a few of the best games (like TimeSplitters 2 & 3) running off the hard drive, but Halo 1 has been ported to 3 other consoles since its original release. No reason for me to dust off the Xbox for it.

I'm just upset the gaming market isn't as rational as I think I am. :)

  • Think off-center.
That's lazy research they do. I'm betting they get their prices from the bundles of non working ones go for about 60-90$ for lilke 10 of em lol.

That's your first mistake.
accept the truth, it will set you free. (nobody is really rational, some just compose themselves better.)
seriously?
i be lucky if i find a box for less than forty gbp.
used to be in the twenty to thirty range, but getting semi-scarce in the pawn shops.
...
did find a crystal box in default state for twenty gbp a few years ago, was given another one recently.
it needs some service works, but otherwise works great.
as things fall to the wayside vs mainstream, expect prices to be hiked.
then again, if it wasn't for mainstream (pack of mutants: carlin) hipsters and yuppies, prices would be a bit more stable...as well as other positive factors.  ;D

Also don't forget that a bunch of the original Xbox games will play on a 360 (just recently learned this).  If you want a really shitty comeback, imagine if the 1st generation Xbox controllers became a hot commodity, lol.
