I absolutely 100% loved the two new hero characters. I can't imagine the movie any other way.

Why does having a female and black lead instantly send you right to "ugh, political correctness"?

I honestly felt it rather refreshing, especially after the abysmal 1-3 trilogy.  Just a mass of monotone white guys running around the whole time.
Color or gender does not matter.

The (female) lead of the movie was OK.

As would be black lead or sidekick, but in this case the black actor felt shoehorned in pointless crap.
He was just there and did really nothing.
If he would have been white he would have been nothing, but as he was kinda advertised as the first black Stormtrooper and lead (maybe as a red herring), and then actually did not anything meaningful, he kinda felt like "Hi, I'm black, deal with it" and thus even less anything.

Hope that made any sense.

Remember that this is a trilogy. His role will grow with 8 & 9. I mean, look a Phasma. She was on screen for about a minute or two. He's pretty clearly the new Hahn Solo IMO.

Remember that this is a trilogy.

Yes and this is partly the problem (if not whole problem):
They should have made one movie instead of trilogy as if you take out all the pointless crap it leaves just perfect amount for one complete movie, instead of this idiotic lazy money whoring expansion to a trilogy.

I mean, look a Phasma. She was on screen for about a minute or two. He's pretty clearly the new Hahn Solo IMO.

Interesting theory...
BTW Phasma (the shiny Stormtrooper) is a woman.

Yes, hence why I said "She".

"He" was referring back to Finn.

Well I avoided this thread until I could get a chance to watch the movie.  Wife and I went to see it tonight in IMAX 3D (first time every seeing a movie in that format).

Here are my thoughts.
First of all, it was pretty obvious that it was directed by JJ Abrams (that has both some good and bad).
I loved Rey's character and the actress.
Finn was ok, sort of surprised he didn't do more.
Ren was awesome until he took off his mask.
Not a fan of Poe's character, and most of the other X-Wing fighters were about as unbelievable as any other fighter pilots in any other Star Wars movie (at least they are consistent)
Overall, the story line was just ok for me, but still looking forward to the rest of the trilogy.
I felt they could have included more links to the previous movies.  I felt there was too much emphasis on getting non-Star Wars fans to watch the movie (all about the money)

I'm giving it a 6 out of 10.

And I just have one question.  How much did Mark Hamill get paid for 30 seconds of screen time and no dialog?  Probably more then I'll ever make in my lifetime.  :P
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

Mr. Ford looks so strained in his reprise role as Han Solo and his story arc seems like he said to the writers "Only one film!".

Actually I remember either reading or hearing about how Harrison Ford would have only agreed to be in a new star wars movie if they killed off Han Solo.  Not that I can begin speculating his reasoning but it could be possible that the fame and popularity brought upon by star wars was just too much attention being brought on in his older age

He's been asking for Solo to be killed off since episode 4. Lucas just wouldn't. Nothing to do with his age or anything like that.

It's an amazing time for ford - 73 years old and doing a new Star Wars AND more importantly, blade runner.  In my books he's the freakin' man.  Blade runner just may be my favourite film
