Long story short, a guy at my work is selling his Xbox 360 stuff, intending to use it to fund his jump into 'next-generation gaming'. He showed me pictures of what he's selling on his phone (so I don't have any to post here) but it's quite a bit of stuff:

Over 100 games (his estimate, looks about right from the pictures), a few of which are still new.
Halo 3 and Halo Reach Legendary editions
Halo 4 collector's edition (I didn't see it in the pictures, but the guy swears he has it)
Fallout New Vegas Collector's edition
Call of Duty Ghosts prestige edition
Some Skylanders stuff (I saw 3 figures and a portal in the pictures)
A half dozen strategy guides
A stack of 'game novels' (Splinter Cell novelizations, Mass Effect books, things like that), about 10 of them
There were a few other things in the pictures as well, controller, chatpad, dance mat.

I'm just not sure what a fair price for this would be, because I got the always helpful "I dunno man, how much do you think it's worth?" when I asked how much he wanted for it. About all the information I have is that it's an all or nothing deal, and it must be at least enough for am Xbox One and a few games. So I told him I'd get back to him, and here I am trying to find out about how much it would be worth. Or, put another way, how much would YOU, fellow TCPers, be willing to pay for it?

I'm not a big X Box guy, so I'm not too familiar with the values, but if you gave him $500, he would have enough to get an XBox One and two or three games. At that price you are averaging $5 a game, not counting any of the other stuff.  That doesn't seem like too bad of a deal as long as you really want all of that stuff.

So if it were me:
$500 or LESS and I would probably get it (assuming you really want the stuff and can swing the money)
$500 or MORE and I would want a specific list of what i was getting to go through and get specific values to see if it was really worth it
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

Since it's not on the list can I assume you're not getting the system itself? If this is the case, I'd probably agree with TDIRunner here. $500 sounds fair on the low end, but if it's any more than that I'd do some research.

If it helps you at all, a quick search on ebay gave me some price estimates just for the special editions you mentioned.

Halo 3 Legendary (extra DVD and helmet replica) ~70-100$
Halo Reach Legendary (12" statue) ~60-120$
Halo 4 Special Edition ~40-60$ (aside from the box, all the bonus content was digital downloads so it's not as pricey)
New Vegas ~$70-120
CoD Ghosts ~$20-70

You are correct, no system is included. He wants to keep his... for some reason.

I do know the approximate prices the special editions are going for; my main hangup is the 100+ other games. And the random stuff. I know there's no duplicate games and no sports games, but beyond that, I don't know.

I will be seeing him tonight, so I guess I will go with "$500 unless you give me some more information". He didn't seem to be a hurry to sell it, so he will probably help me out. I'll see if I can get some more details, maybe an exact count.

Talked to him last night, told him I'd stick to $500 unless he gave me some more information. There was grumbling, but he agreed to look and give me a more detailed account of what he had. So, mid-day, I receive an email:

500$ is too low, look at everything and see for yourself. This must be sold before black friday! I'm looking at a Playstation 4 or Xbox one and a wii U (depending on the sales of course) and at least a lot of games so i need 600$ or so.

115 games, it would take too long to list them all!

Some info about games:
- no madden, baseball, FIFA, anything like that
- all games work, ive either played them or they are new
- only game ive 2 of is halo 4 (regular and collectors edition)
- 11 are stil shinkwrapped so they are brand new
- killer is dead special edition still new
- call of duty ghosts prestige is still new
- halo 3 with game, bonus disc, helmet, helmet cover cloth, original box, helmet is in perfect condition, box has some scuffs
- Halo 4 with metal case, gray dossier box, download codes, mini-guides, cardboard sleeve, everything like new except one of the codes which i used
- halo reach with statue (no damage, all parts), original box, all the tie in stuff that comes with it, diary, files, its really cool
- fallout New Vegas has poker chips, deck of cards, bonus disc, original box, and 2 copies of the comic book. all like new
- 3 Skylander statues and 2 bases. used to have about 30 but ive sold them a few weeks ago
- floor controller for dance game
- black Xbox 360 gamepad
- white Xbox 360 gamepad and chat keyboard attachment
- Xbox 360 chat mic, never used

and info about the other stuff:
- halo legends movie
- prototype strategy guide
- prototype 1 and 2 comic books (2 books)
- metal gear rising strategy guide
- gears of war judgement collectors edition strategy guide
- fallout new vegas strategy guide, still new, i never needed it lol
- assassins creed art book (the art of assassins creed)
- assassins creed 4 book (blackbeards journal), still new, never got around to reading
- 13 books all game tie ins. ghost recon, hawx, splinter cell, mass effect, endwar. i have others laying around somewhere, i will throw them in when i find them.

hit me up on lunch if you have any other questions. ill let you know about those other books too

And then, about an hour later, a second email:

i dug around for the books and i found some stuff I think you might be interested in:

- more books (12 more books, dragon age comics, resident evil books, dragon age book, resistance comic)
- littlebigplanet strategy guide, dont even have a ps3!

also xbox games:

- mechassasult 1 and 2
- steel batallion (with the controller foot pedals and control panel, and original instruction manual, its huge! works perfectly)
- 2 controller for the first xbox

and about the price, i think 700$ would be fair for everything. let me know on monday what you think

So in conclusion, I have more information than I did before. A total of 118 games, no sports or duplicate games, multiple special editions in new or near new condition, a veritable pile of game tie-in books and strategy guides, multiple controllers, some random other stuff, and a Steel Battalion controller. And a hard expectation of price - $700. The special editions and Steel Battalion stuff tip the balance, and this would more than double my Xbox 360 collection in one fell swoop.

It's not that I can't afford it (though it is quite a bit of money), and it's not that it's a bad deal. It's just that it almost doesn't feel good ENOUGH for $700. It's enough money that my regular 'this is a good deal' sensors aren't working properly. If you were me, would you go for it, try to bargain it down, or just leave it?

Yeah, I would probably leave that as well.  Unless you completely passed on the 7th gen consoles (no 360 no PS3) this is a bit much to spend on a bunch of last gen stuff.

HOWEVER...if they're games you're interested in, you probably won't find that many games AND Steel Battalion WITH CONTROLLER for that low.

Yeah, other than the special editions and the original Xbox games, I don't know exactly which games would be included. From talking to him, I seem to be the only person even remotely interested, so maybe I can pester him into putting together a list. After all, if it's 50% things I already have, I would find it a lot easier to say no to.

Or if he would drop the books/guides, and sell it for a hundred or so dollars less. That would do it too. But he seemed set on 'all or nothing'  :-\

$600 is still too much imo. Lots always go for less, or at least they should because you're doing him a favor in taking all his crap at once. If he sells everything individually he'd be very lucky to clear $500. For the lot, I personally wouldn't feel comfortable paying anything over $400, but that's me. Also consider how many people are trying to do the same thing as him dropping their 7th gen for 8th and the value just isn't there. I'd say thanks but no thanks.

Honestly, the special editions aren't worth very much, so even if you bought those a la carte off eBay or something, they would be nowhere NEAR what he is asking.
If you're seriously interested, get a list of games.  I have never heard of someone selling "a bunch of games" for that much without even listing the titles, especially if you had a PS3 and may already own or have played most of these.  Most games weren't exactly different across platforms.

Realistically, not many people will buy a stack of books for $100 or so, same with half the games probably.  So if he doesn't go all in, then half that stuff probably isn't going to sell.

Something else to consider is that a lot of those 118 games could be worth pennies.  I know that I've gone to gamestop and bought a lot of games for like 2 bucks with even more being part of a buy 2 get 1 free deal.  And with so many games there's bound to be a lot you have already.

That being said 500 is imo too much as it is without the system...and 700 is way over priced.  Like fritz I would go 400 and no more.  I think he is just trying to get back basically what he paid into it or he is pricing everything individually on the high side.

You should ask for his gamertag so you can see the games he's played.  That'll give you a clearer shot of what he at least played so you can compare with your own games.

Got a list. Of all the games, only 3 are ones I've played before - GTA 5, which I have on PS4, Bully (but the Scholarship Edition would constitute an upgrade), and Halo 3, which I have the regular edition of. Also, he's added in a few more games (10ish), for PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube. And a PS2. And an Xbox.

I'm getting kind of put off by the constant 'oh, I also found X'. It makes it feel like if I had accepted the initial offer, he'd just be trying to sell these to me separately. So I told him he'd have to lower the price a little, or I wouldn't buy it.

Either he drops the price (since the endless 'one more thing' makes it seem like he is desperate to move it) or he just throws more stuff in with it until I'm comfortable spending $700 on it. So, the email containing the list:

i found my old xbox console! and my playstation 2 and some playstation 2 games. consider them part of the 700$ package.

you asked me for a list, so i wrote one up. its alphabetical. took me a few hours lol. the other stuff is in the other email, Im not going to write it all down again. guides, controllers and books, you already know about anyway.

See if he comes down, but there are some titles on that list that if you turned around and sold you could make a chunk of your money back (Pikmin 2, Conker, Marvel Alliance 2, Drakengard 2 are all in the $30 range, the PS2 set could fetch a chunk since it has some RPGs, Steel Battalion, etc).

So if you like the list of games and want to give 360 a shot, flip some of it, and it may be worth it.

Well the story has come to an end. I guess 'one of his brothers friends came over to hang out', saw all of the boxed up games and offered $850 for it. So no Xbox pile for me, not this time, because if I wasn't sure about it at $700, I'm certainly not going to pay more than 850 to buy it out from under his friend, which was an option he offered.

Oh well. :(
