I thought the PS TV was the Vita version of Game Boy Player? Or is it something else?

Yes, standalone version that is incompatible with some games.

But with less functionality!

I read that it was included in the original design, but they took it out so that they could sell the PS TV. :-\

And.........

I actually USE my Playstation TV! I have a 64GB memory card in it, hardwired into my home network so it does PS4 remote play very well.

I picked up the $149.00 (I think) bundle from Wallyworld that came with 2 games (LEGO movie and Sly Cooper) a 8GB memory card, and a PS3 controller.

It isn't the most used console in my collection, but what it does, it does very well! I've even been doing some "creative" firmware experiments with it.

Not ready for prime time, but not suitable for the toilet either! I will have to respectfully disagree with you Wiggy!

Both devices are separated by a few years, so I don't think that was it.

Look at the SONY handhelds that could output video, the PSP 2000, 3000, and the N 1000. I think that for the VITA that SONY was just waiting for the right time to release an adapter of some type.

On the earlier firmware versions, prior to 3.50, IIRC, two of the pins on the "mystery port" were actually live, but  isn't anymore. So I think they have given up on TV output totally.

Yeah, but they new PS TV was down the line, and if Vita had video out function, it would be much more difficult to sell the PS TV.

With the controller and memory card, it was worth a purchase.

Even though I don't use it, I'm glad to have it just to have it :P

I know someone with an EXTREMELY rare Vita prototype from when it was going to look a LOT more like the PSP go!  I can ask him if there was/is an A/V out on it...

I was hopeful when it launched. I think it would have been a wise decision to rebrand vita at the same time. Similar in fashion to when the PS3 rebranded many years ago. Generate some new excitement with a few titles and label both the Vita and PSTV logos on the games.
