Mark Brown is the perfect suggestion for such a thread:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0c5Le1vGp4

Here's some examples:

I have a graph notebook filled with ideas, so once I actually get the game, I'll have ideas ready to go. I'll be sure to post them for you guys.

I hate to bump a months old topic, but I figured there was no need to make a new thread. This one is still valid. Plus, now that there is a website where you can bookmark the stages, it's even easier to link them for people to check out.

I only have one stage thus far, but I'm always working on ideas. So, here's my first stage: Icy Excavation
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/E4CE-0000-015F-6706

Here's my second stage, fresh out the oven: Mercury Rising
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/8C79-0000-0181-BF60

A single screen stage for number 3: Within Reach
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/1E53-0000-017E-5439

Number 4 has you carefully swim to safety: Banquet Bay
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/67F8-0000-018D-F7AC

Panga inspired stage 5, but it's not nearly as hard: Koopa Troopa Trampoline
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/7A17-0000-018D-FB52

I decided to remake a Super Mario World stage for number 6: Donut House Remixed
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/6D7D-0000-01A1-C2AD

Number 7 was one I had been sitting on for a while: Featherweight Flatland
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/6EFB-0000-01AA-33C1

My eighth stage is the most straight-forward stage I've made: Cannon Crash Course
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/87E9-0000-01B5-26C2

I tried to make stage 9 an easy stage: Character Trials
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/3A12-0000-01B6-A67F

On the other hand, making a difficult stage for number 10 took little effort: Hibernation Hysteria

I finally got some free time this weekend and I thought I'd play some Super Mario Maker. Here's my first uploaded course:

"Trust the Fungus"

Should be challenging but not at all impossible. There are also a few hidden blocks along the way.

Now I need to go back and play all these levels you guys made!

Whoo! I finally got 50 stars! I can now upload more stages!

@Larry: I loved Princess Peach's Escape. It really felt like a romp back to the beginning.

@Gamer: I don't know why I find Airship Assault so annoying to beat. I will do it eventually.

@Tyrann: I'm pretty sure I skipped half your level. Unless you intended for people to be able to kill the piranha plants in the clouds with a galoomba.

I attempt a brutally hard level made by Giant Bomb's Dan Ryckert and fail miserably

I will definitely check out your guys' levels and make a video :D

Hah nice one, I didn't plan for that possibility.  ;)

Clearly this means I must redouble my efforts to make a laundry list of stages, so you can have content for your Youtube page. I'll make sure to design extra tough ones just for you.  ;D

Whelp, with the latest update here, I'm going to resurrect this thread in hopes of getting more people to try out my levels.
I do feel warranted in making a second post, as my first one is already bloated with 10 stages.

For stage 11, I attempted to make a normal stage, as you'd find in a traditional Mario game: Fresh Frolic Field
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/8BFF-0000-01BA-A44A

I made stage 12 in an attempt to celebrate a milestone, and ended up with two stages, this one being the first: Cannon Reaction Range
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/54D4-0000-01D6-BDBC

The second stage to come out of my celebratory milestone, stage 13 was actually my first autoscroll, before I addded it to the previous one: Cannon Hop Canyon
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/926F-0000-01D7-988B

I participated in a Limited Palette challenge, which resulted in number 14: Within Reach 2: Looming Phantasm
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/959D-0000-01E7-52A5

More a proof of concept rather than a well thought out stage Now a more thought out stage, 15 has you fight 8 "bosses" before fighting the big bad of the game: Mega Man Boss Rush
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/2247-0000-01F1-3D24

It would seem I'm trying really hard here to stir up interest in a game no one else has any interest in.

How do you guys know how to make stages good? It's too hard for me to make anything cool or fun.

How do you guys know how to make stages good? It's too hard for me to make anything cool or fun.

There's several ways to go about it. You could remake some of your favorite stages to see what it was about them that you loved. You could experiment with the maker until you find a quirk or technique you hadn't thought of and expand on it. You can also play other stages and experiment with ideas those stages had.

As I mentioned before, Mark Brown is the perfect suggestion.
He did a standard Mario vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBmIkEvEBtA
He also did a Mario Maker vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0c5Le1vGp4

Both are quite helpful in designing a good Mario stage.

My main suggestion is to find one thing you want to do in the stage. Start by showing, in a safe environment, the basis for the entire stage. Then slowly expand on it. Take away safety nets, force it multiple times in a row without breaks. Find an advance version of that technique. Play with it.

Oh, and get a play tester. Don't tell them anything going in. You'll get interesting feedback that way.
