If DRM has been switched off, then the software will be available in some form on the net.

This.

I'm willing to bet that even if it doesn't get switched off, the software will be available in some form on the net.

Dr.Agon:

physical, always!

(outside of Android and iOS, obviously)

if a hard drive goes, i don't have to re-download or re-purchase, if the console dies, i don't have to re-download or re-purchase, etc.

I get what you are trying to say, but digital games can be lost.  There is no guarantee that they will be available forever.

^^^ This

There's already been stuff pulled from the online stores because of licensing issues.  Turtles Arcade on PSN and PT for a start.  If I had those on physical media, I could install them to any new machine I wanted, but as it stands, if my hdd fails, they are lost.

In fact, I think turtles is probably on my broken PS3, so yeah it's gone, even though I paid for it.
