That is my assumption wiggy. My issue is what happens if your hard drive goes later on? Once the server goes offline if you ever lose your downloads for some reason there will be no way to replace them.

If DRM has been switched off, then the software will be available in some form on the net.

Availability will depend on if companies are willing to switch off the DRM. I don't see this being an issue for many small studios and indies, but I can see the larger companies choosing not to turn off DRM. I still have a fair number of digital purchases from last generation, I'm just unsure about what the future availability of those titles will be. This is really the first generation of consoles to go obsolete that have a large amount of digital content. It will be interesting to see what the longterm support strategies of both Microsoft and Sony are.

Part of video gaming for me has become the collecting, so I will stick to physical.

Whats more fun to own:

A cd with every NES rom on it, or some actual carts?

I like having my carts.  But they typically sit on the shelf while my Everdrive gets a workout. ;)
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

This.

I'm willing to bet that even if it doesn't get switched off, the software will be available in some form on the net.

physical, always!

(outside of Android and iOS, obviously)

if a hard drive goes, i don't have to re-download or re-purchase, if the console dies, i don't have to re-download or re-purchase, etc.

i really like digitsal copies of games, they are so much easier to use becase i cant lose them.
i was always losing discs before but now that i keep on doing games witrh gold i cant lose them and they are so easy to find and digital copies never get scratched!!!!

I get what you are trying to say, but digital games can be lost.  There is no guarantee that they will be available forever.

^^^ This

There's already been stuff pulled from the online stores because of licensing issues.  Turtles Arcade on PSN and PT for a start.  If I had those on physical media, I could install them to any new machine I wanted, but as it stands, if my hdd fails, they are lost.

In fact, I think turtles is probably on my broken PS3, so yeah it's gone, even though I paid for it.
