I'm changing this thread to be about my project. Having a system that 95% looks and functions as an NES, plays NES games (in ROM format) and uses NES controllers. At first, I wanted to use an Xbox 360 PSU to power it, but I figured out a better way. Here's my original question:

I figured if anyone would know, Wiggy would be the guy. Working on an original Xbox case mod (want to put it in an NES). However, I want to externalize the PSU. I see that 360 and original have similar voltages, so I'm thinking I can cut up the broken original psu I have and modify it into a 360 socket. I see this has been done with PS3. Any ideas?

So I'm going to use a Pico mini PSU adapter to make it even more NES-like.  It's a device which replaces a PC ATX PSU with an external AC adapter, sort of like the old cartridge systems. So I got one of these:

PicoPSU-120w

with this AC adapter:

12v 8.5a AC-DC Power Adapter

And used this diagram to make a converter so it will work in my v1.0 Xbox:

All of the parts I got from (besides mini-box.com) a combination of Radio Shack and Micro Center. I used an extension cable with a 20-pin female ATX jack on one end and my sliced off 12-pin plug from my broken Xbox PSU for the other end. I didn't use any PCB's or anything, just pretty much soldered exactly as the picture shows. Most of the cables had more wires on the ATX side, so same colored wires were bundled together. Here is how my converter came out:

Never wanted to do anything with it other than shove it into a dark corner of my game room :P

Honestly most game consoles are pretty much gross looking IMO, and the Xbox, while rather large, isn't nearly as offensive to me as it is to most everyone else.

Ya, I know a lot of people like to do/have custom stuff, but I actually like the look of the original xbox. So the only thing I would probably want to do is do a custom paint job and soft mods. Not dissing what you want to do, but I would pass on that idea.
What are you looking at? You think baby's don't like video games? THEN YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT BABIES!!

I agree about the original xbox looking alright as is. I have the Halo edition which looks pretty neat. The only thing I don't like are the grooves because I need qtips to really clean the dust out of them. I like my Xbox One but the sheer size of the thing is offensive. It's a big lard ass of a console.

I also don't think the Xbox looks nearly as bad as the XBox One.  I really liked the white XBox 360s, but mine is a black 360 S which I also think is pretty ugly.

Hmm. It's not so much that I don't like the look of the Xbox, I just like the NES look more. Though I do prefer the look of the newer Microsoft tech, rather than old. In order, by appearance only, I like slim Xbox 360, super slim 360, Xbox One, original 360, then the old Xbox. For PlayStation, I like the look of the PS One more than the original, the slim PS2 more than the original, and PS3- slim, original, super slim.

For 360, I like the super slim best because it's small, whisper quiet and I know that it's a superior version of the same system as the fat and regular slim models. The regular slim is a close second. It's significantly faster than the fat 360, it's not prone to red ring, it accepts the small, internal hdds, and though I prefer the wired connection, it will accept wireless with no adapter.

I liked the fat model 360 early on in the system's life, but now I just associate the design with red ring and smaller harddrives. The interchangeable faceplates were cool though.

One nice thing about the original Xbox is that the power brick was inside the system shell.

I've never seen the 360 super slim in real life, (nor Xbox One or PS4), but the super slim PS3 looks like a damn toy!

It feels like one too.  Unfortunately I bought one after my original phat one failed.  The sliding door on the top is horrible and plasticy. BUT it is really silent - the only noise you can hear is the sound of the disc spinning.

My fiance's dad has a ps3 super slim and the disc spinning is loud and annoying imo. i can hear it over my headphones most of the time even.  :-\

I just assumed that you wanted to do it because you were using your XBox as an NES emulator.   :P

Sure, it's possible. However, it would be easier to modify something or make an enclosure to accommodate the internal power supply from the XBox.
