Original Xbox in an NES shell.
marioxb:
I'm changing this thread to be about my project. Having a system that 95% looks and functions as an NES, plays NES games (in ROM format) and uses NES controllers. At first, I wanted to use an Xbox 360 PSU to power it, but I figured out a better way. Here's my original question:
I figured if anyone would know, Wiggy would be the guy. Working on an original Xbox case mod (want to put it in an NES). However, I want to externalize the PSU. I see that 360 and original have similar voltages, so I'm thinking I can cut up the broken original psu I have and modify it into a 360 socket. I see this has been done with PS3. Any ideas?

Not my forte, sorry :(

So I'm going to use a Pico mini PSU adapter to make it even more NES-like. It's a device which replaces a PC ATX PSU with an external AC adapter, sort of like the old cartridge systems. So I got one of these:
PicoPSU-120w
with this AC adapter:
12v 8.5a AC-DC Power Adapter
And used this diagram to make a converter so it will work in my v1.0 Xbox:
All of the parts I got from (besides mini-box.com) a combination of Radio Shack and Micro Center. I used an extension cable with a 20-pin female ATX jack on one end and my sliced off 12-pin plug from my broken Xbox PSU for the other end. I didn't use any PCB's or anything, just pretty much soldered exactly as the picture shows. Most of the cables had more wires on the ATX side, so same colored wires were bundled together. Here is how my converter came out:

Never wanted to do anything with it other than shove it into a dark corner of my game room :P
Honestly most game consoles are pretty much gross looking IMO, and the Xbox, while rather large, isn't nearly as offensive to me as it is to most everyone else.

Ya, I know a lot of people like to do/have custom stuff, but I actually like the look of the original xbox. So the only thing I would probably want to do is do a custom paint job and soft mods. Not dissing what you want to do, but I would pass on that idea.
