Retro games are just more of the IN thing

For a very small few. While they are definitely popular at the moment, retro game sales still can't compete with call of duty, or other huge triple-a games. How many copies do you think Metal Gear Solid 5 has already sold? Even when you discount "casuals" and just look at the hardcore market, the next cookie cutter Call of Duty or assassins creed  is more than likely going to sell  10 times better than anything retro on the eShop, HD remake titles or anything sold  in  retro game stores.  So while there is high demand for the retro market, it would seem that the vast majority of consumers prefer what is new and fresh.

For the people that count as classic gamers. Metal Gear Solid 5 doesn't exist.

Personal Perception> Objectivity

I'm telling you. There are a lot of people I know that know about retro games. But as soon as I start talking about them, they listen. And 2 of my friends built collections of their own because of me. So when you're in a room with me, retro becomes the new thing. Magic starts to transpire. People listen and get intrigued. I've even got my 10 year old nephew hooked on Dreamcast shooters. I've seen it with my own eyes.

I own around 2000 games, several of which are PS1 and older.  Pretty sure I count as a "classic gamer."
And I am currently, as I type this with one hand, holding my copy of MGS V in my other.  So your argument is invalid.

For those that choose to avoid new games entirely, I wouldn't call them "classic gamers."  I don't know WHAT I would call them, but to each their own.

I know that some people are snobs who think that anything past a certain generation of consoles is trash - and to them I say get off your high horse and shove it up your ass.
Concepts like "better" and "fun" are relative.  One person's opinion is no better than another's.  That said, if all you want to play is old stuff with bad graphics, be my guest.  Me?  I'm playing an amazing game right now.  Next, I think I may go back and play a few Genesis or TG 16 titles.  Or maybe I'll just play Fallout 4.  That's the benefit of versatility.

I think retro gaming hold a certain nostalgic factor for a lot of people.  I know that's part of the appeal for me whenever I fire up the ole Genesis.

But reall... Classic gamer... Modern gamer...  Who cares?

Games are supposed to be fun.  Once we start labeling gamers as this or that we draw lines of division.  Us vs Them in a battle for supremacy.  Just play what you like.  Who cares if it's a game from thirty years ago or something that was just released thirty minutes ago...  Pop it in the system and enjoy.

Yes, I like to play a little of everything and don't want to limit my gaming.

I found a comparision photo of the N3DS vs N3DS XL to anyone interested. I like the big screens of the XL though it is pretty clunky in the pocket...

Yep, only requirement is that the game is good.

It's just that finding good games on current generation is hard...

Agreed.  That's ONE of the reasons why I haven't bought any cur gen stuff yet, but I will eventually.  It seems silly to avoid current gen only because you consider yourself a retro gamer.  I KNOW FOR A FACT, that I'm a retro gamer, but I still love newer stuff.  The biggest reason I avoid current gen is due to cost.  I have so little time to play games now that I just don't want to spend top dollar for it when I know I can wait several years for prices to come down.  If I was younger without a wife or kid, I would have bought a PS4 by now, and I would probably love it, but at my age, I can wait until the time is right.  It isn't like I don't have over 1,000 games to play in the mean time. :P
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

In other words, you are the exact opposite of Wiggy.  :P

Kind of  :P

If I had the money to just buy a smaller n3DS to see how it stacks up, I might. But college does things to prevent that  :P
Not entirely related, but I'd be more inclined to invest into the 3DS if they allowed SNES/GBA on virtual console already. It's not like the 3DS can't handle Earthbound.

Ugh, I remember that.  I had to sell a LARGE chunk of my collection while in college, and that was before the retro market went all KABOOM, so I didn't make the killing that I would have today.  Shit, I probably could have retired from the sales of that stuff if I were selling it in today's market.

I actually own a N3DS slim and the screens are leaps and bounds beyond the 3DS/3DS XL (if you didn't know that already) and they're substantially larger as well.  I'll snap a pic of the 3DS and N3DS next to each other.  Hold on...

That's what I tried to tell people but they disagreed. Unless you're into games like Max Fury, Black Ops or MGS 5.

Lesson learned: it's ok to like modern games, as long as they're on Einhander's "approved" list.

You can't be a retro gamer if you like Metal Gear 5. Duh!

I'm not a MGS/COD fan, so I guess I'm ok.  Although, I did like watchdogs and infamous.  But I'm not keen on missile command or Zelda (yeah, I said it), does that mean I'm not a retro gamer? Shit, I have no label.  Maybe I'm not a gamer at all?

I dunno, Sheep. But I wager ol' Single-Appendage can sort out some sort of inane classification for ya.

Due to the string of events known as Real Life, I find myself playing Skyrim and nothing else lately (need some mind-numbing non-story to fill the void), so one could argue I'm not a gamer as well :P

Seriously though, as for retro gaming, I'm not as into it as many of the people here (I got into gaming around the end of 5th-gen). Mainly because the things I like to see in games either occurred rarely or not at all in retro games. That, and I prefer RPGs, which aren't exactly cheap on retro consoles around here due to their supposed scarcity. I've been trying to find a way to play SNES RPGs that doesn't cost me an arm and a leg lately. No luck as of yet.

My wife likes to watch me play retro games, and that's one of the big reasons I'll pick playing an old retro over a current title.  She says newer games are too confusing and overwhelming and that an older game is easier for her to see what I'm trying to do.  She really likes to watch me play the weird Japanese games too, like Akiba's Trip and the Agarest War titles because of their inherent goofiness.
I'm bender3455 on playstation network, feel free to add me!
