Ummm, what?  There's going to be a 160gb console released this fall which replaces the 80gb MGS4/Motorstorm packages, not to be confused with the current 80gb package with no backwards compatibility.  This 160gb console is going to be released with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

Basically they just doubled the capacity while keeping the features the same.  Unless this announcement changed since then, you can still play your PS2 games on the soon to be released 160gb console if you haven't picked up a PS3 yet.  I don't know what you mean by current, but I was just playing Katamari and God of War on my PS3 that I got in June.  Yeah, there are some games that don't play well, but for the most part it plays very solidly, and they can be fixed eventually.

For the record, I think it still looks best to match the PS1/PS2 spines.

Europe phased out the PS2 compatibility very early on.  So unless we import one, we are screwed.

60gig models (the last one with compat) change hands for silly money.

The US is phasing out backwards compatibility as well. In fact, the upcoming 160gb ps3 will NOT have backwards compatibility with the ps2.

20GB, 60GB, 80GB all had backwards compatibility with PS2 games. New 80GB, 40GB, and 120GB systems don't.

Wow, Sony is crazy.  I honestly don't get it.

Do you have a link to a post or article with that update?  I have the PSBlog on my RSS feed but they made no mention of that change as far as I know.

I stilldon't have a PS2. I'm getting one by new year's though. (If there's gonna be a price drop before winter 2009, winter 2008 is it. Nobody price drops in summer unless sales are down.)

Thanks for the link, Apple.

I wish Sony would keep the option available.  That MGS4 bundle was too short lived, but I'm glad I got it when I had the chance.  Now I know how much of an investment that was.  I'd rather take on the cost of buying a bigger hard drive than have no option for backwards compatibility.  I hope this changes, ugh.

Though I find it kind of odd that the Playstation blog I was referring to (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/08/20/live-from-leipzig-north-american-hardware-announcements/) was posted on August 20th, 2008, and that Joystiq article says no compatibility 7 days later.  I wonder if Joystiq is wrong.

Just want to remind people that I'm still working on a template, that I haven't given up.

The template will include the Black & Gradient spine and title bar. It will also include the PS2 & "Spidey" Font as well for anyone who enjoys that. In fact, I feel they are done. I just have to get the template together for all the logo crap (Blu-ray, "Number of Players", region, etc.).

Just an update.

Mine does. Imported from Singapore (went to get it myself...well via a holiday in Oz)

I thought about grabbing one at singapore airport on my way back from New Zealand - but i wanted to be able to play UK Blu Rays on it - not bought a single one yet!  ::)

I only have one Blu Ray and that was Casino Royale that Sony sent me for registering when PSN went live in the U.K and that plays fine on my PS3. Perhaps because its an Asian version rather than Japanese and covers places like Hong Kong. We had three days in Singapore and the place is like a gamers heaven...full of little shops selling stuff from Japan for every system at reasonable prices.Hong Kong was the same...i could spend months there. :D

You have to poke around in these tiny looking 'shopping malls' for want of a better word but you find whole floors just selling games in premesis about the size of a small papershop. But the stuff there is unreal. I had to be dragged out in the end! DS/PSP is real cheap compared to ours, they have both JP and US stuff and of course, you can haggle. I picked up a few PS games and AES carts last time as well as DS.
