Ok guys, I'm sorry to do this, but I'm trying to figure out which one to keep (or maybe buy) for home console.
I've looked all over the net and can't get a solid answer on which is the best.

I have it for:
SNES
32x (thinking about selling)
Saturn (thinking about selling)
Xbox (Doom 3 Collectors/BFG Edition)

I want the best of all worlds, (all levels, great sound and graphics, all weapons and monsters, good frame rate...) but it looks like I'm not goin to get this from just one version. So I suppose I mainly want all levels with good frame rate.

I'm leaning to the PS1 version but am unsure.

Would also like to get Doom 64 since it's pretty much a different game alltogether.

Any thoughts/opinions and insight would be great!

Edit: I'm looking for PS1 and older. Nothing newer pretty please!

Look up Doom 3 BFG Edition, it came with DOOM, DOOM 2, AND 3.

Seemed like a faithful emulation when I played it on my 360, also available on PS3.

I have the BFG edition, (as stated above, but prolly wasn't that clear)

I also have it for 360 but it doesn't have all the levels.
And from what I've read neither does the  PS3 version.

So I guess I mean from PS1 and back.

Thanks though.

For me the ultimate version (on home console) of the ORIGINAL Doom alone is the N64 version.......just looks and feels right to me.

Got me a really great condition Japanese CIB copy recently and plays like a dream.

Just my 2 cents.  ;)

I found a PS1 version a few months ago and popped it in just to test it. I ended up playing it for over an hour, it was a very good port. SNES and 32x versions suck for different reasons. I never tried it on Saturn though. Doom 64 is also very good but if I remember right it was more like a sequel than a port.

Doom 64 is more like Doom 3 than the real Doom 3 was. Not to say that I didn't like Doom 3. But it's certainly different than the first 2.

Ah. I see.  I thought you were referring to the doom 3 port on the original xbox lol.

From what I know about the other Doom ports the 32x has good graphics but bad sound.  Snes is the opposite, bad graphics good sound.

I feel like either n64 or ps1 would be the best bet.  But having played neither on those systems I can't say for sure which is the best port

Well doom 64 is more like a sequel than a port.
Meh. It's like asking myself which copies of resident evil do I want to keep. I have Resident Evil, Resident Evil Directors cut and Resident Evil 2 on PS1. But then I also have Resident Evil for Saturn and Resident Evil 2 for N64.... Don't know which ones I wanna ditch.

This is also technically a sequel, however I think the best Doom on the 5th gen (and previous) is Final Doom.  It plays like the original Doom on PSX, but is an enchanced version of Doom II.  Again, sequel, but a damn fine game.

RE DC for PS1 (for the easy/normal/hard modes), RE for Saturn (for the red hunter extra enemy) and RE 2 for N64 - unless you have the dual shock ps1 version of RE 2, then stick with that version.

It's funny that you ask, because I just played Doom 64 for the first time ever about two days ago.  I couldn't believe how good it was.

It's difficult to answer your question though.  SNES had better sound than 32x, but 32x looked better (despite the smaller window).  I know you don't own it, but Jaguar port looks better than 32x and SNES, but doesn't have music (WTF).  I also have the Saturn version, but I haven't really played it enough to say how I feel about it.  32x version is the only one I've actually played all the way through (not counting PC version).  I actually enjoyed the 32x version.  I forgot about the small window after just a few minutes.  I did it the day I bought it.  I put it in to test it and didn't turn it off until after I beat it.

I don't own the PS1 version, but I really want it.  I actually want to eventually have every port of Doom (I also need the 3DO version).
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

Well I looks like if I want everything I can get out of this game, I'm going to have to have multiple versions of the port lol. Kind sucks but whatever. It's pretty sad that no single doom is like another doom.

@TDI
The Saturn version is pretty good except for 1 thing. Frame rate drops.... And it literally lags  so bad that your jaw will drop just like the frame rate...
I believe it has a n extra level in it.

I just tried it again for the first time in a while, and you are right the frame rate is a mess.  It really is hard to pick one version that is the best.   :-X

The original PC version is still the best, which can be had on Steam of next to nothing. However, I still prefer to play the original, in DOS, on old hardware. But if neither of those are options I think that the best console port is probably the PS1 version. Though there are differences from the PC version.

I completely agree that PC is best for this game, I assumed from the OP that we were just discussing console versions of the game.

I'm not much of a PC gamer, but this is one of the games that I want to try and get and older DOS computer setup to play this game again (along with Dark Forces and Duke Nukem 3D).  I played the hell out of those games back in the day.
