There is only 1 reason people buy Mario and Zelda games anymore, and it's not because they are good. They are rehashed crap and are only bought because of the name.

No, not really. I like Mario and Zelda games and that's one of the reasons I bought say, Super Mario 3D World but I also bought it because it looked like something I would enjoy. Something I didn't get was Hyrule Warriors because I wasn't sure about it but after playing the demo I can say I want it now. The name doesn't matter to me it's weather or not I like the game. That's why Shovel Knight is great for me, new name great game!  ;D And as for the rehashed thing, what exactly would any of us do with the games? Making the games too different makes fans upset. Look at Luigi's Mansion when it released, met with mixed reviews and some really bad ones because it was a DEPARTURE from the Mario formula. When a company tries something too different people don't know what to think (an example is really the WiiU on release). People end up upset when the formula is the same and upset when it is different but many of them make snap judgments and never actually PLAY the games. We just need to get the games that we enjoy and try the ones we don't and THEN make a judgement. That's why Nintendo Power played the games and the reviewed them. Not saying that you do but that seems to be what happens a lot.

No I don't do that. I actually own a Wii U. I have played all these games. I've not like a console zelda game since the SNES. The new Mario games are ok that's about it.
I'm not going to judge something that I have loved doing/playing/collecting for the last 25 years badly without trying it out first.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.  At this point, I'm really only interested in Nintendo for their first party software.  With that said, there is enough of it to warrant purchasing their system.  I don't believe Nintendo is trying to complete with Microsoft or Sony.  They are trying to create and sell systems that stand on their own regardless of what exists in the competition.  The Wii achieved this perfectly.  The Wii U, not as much, but still enough for me to want to purchase one.

It's all a moot, really. A lot of the arguments presented thus far can be applied to any of the currently available systems. Case in point:

There is only 1 reason people buy [Call of Duty] anymore, and it's not because they are good. They are rehashed crap and are only bought because of the name.

Though it may not have as many games as either the PS4 or 360, quantity does not equal quality. Depending on the types of games you enjoy playing, the Wii U may have the best library available.

I am curious to hear which games on the XBOX One and the PS4 that people consider great? It seems like there has been a drought of software all around this generation.

I agree on the drought of software for this generation.  I was a Day-1 PS4 purchaser, and hardly had bought maybe 3 games in the first few months.  There just wasn't anything available, and it seemed like most of what was available, I could either get on my PS3 or it was a HD version of a PS3 game.  I think we're just now starting to get to the good stuff with this generation of consoles when it comes to solid variety and choices.  If I could go back, I'd probably get a Wii U first, and then buy a PS4 when the Batman Edition came out, which would have jumped me in with a slew of good options for PS4.
I'm bender3455 on playstation network, feel free to add me!

I never once said anything about Call of Dooty. As a matter of fact I don't like Call of Dooty.
I also said that I'm not a fan of any of the new consoles. But if we must go further, the 360 had a plethora of GREAT games that blows the Wii and Wii u out of the water.

But since we are talking about the xbox one. Let's go with this short list.

The Witcher 3
Dragon Age
Terraria and Minecraft
Dying Light
Forza
The Evil Within
Resident Evil Revelations 2

That list alone puts the Wii U to shame. And I'm pretty damn sure that Fallout 4 isn't coming out on th Wuu soooo. Ya point proven.

As I said. It's all a matter of opinion. But if we are judging apples to apples, we can clearly see what had the better games.

That list puts the Wii U to shame? There are some good games on there for sure, but what is it that makes these games better? Perhaps it's because I don't understand your argument against the Mario and Zelda games. I can only assume that it's because they are "rehashes" but that argument holds absolutely no water if you're citing games like "The Witcher 3" and Resident Evil Revelations 2" which are sequels unto themselves and only iterate on basic gameplay instead of revolutionizing it. However, such games can still be well made and very fun, which the Mario and Zelda games are, so...?

Speaking of which, I used Call of Duty as an example because it's a game that comes out every year and continues to sell well despite being a rehash. Most first person games suffer from this. I find it rather funny that you're hailing Fallout 4 as a deciding factor between which system has the better games since it's another sequel and in a lot of ways just more of the same. I suppose if Fallout 4 was exclusive to the Ouya, it would be the clear winner. So, how has your point been proven, exactly?

If we are judging apples to apples, then we ought to be comparing games within the same genre. In that were the case, there might be a few games on the Wii U that take the crown. However, the Wii U definitely offers much less choice, and the ports that are available on it are... OK. I'm currently playing through Arkham Origins and it hard locks every once in a while. I'm not sure if that's just a problem with the game itself or the Wii U version. Either way, it's very annoying.

Just my piddly two cents on the subject, considering I don't own a Wii U, PS4 or XBox One. My "newest" system is a standard Wii...

I'm the type of guy who waits to buy a modern console system until many years after it's been released. I'm an old school gamer, so new systems have to build up quite the library before I'm even interested in purchasing them. I am impressed with the quality of titles available currently for the Wii U. Sure, it's not a HUGE library, but it's enough to make the system worthwhile. The problem? I just can't justify paying $300+ for the Wii U. The price just isn't where I think it should be on a sheer personal level.

I really want to play the latest LEGO games -- Jurassic World, Batman 3, Marvel Superheroes, etc. I also want to play God of War III, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and a few other modern titles.

Long story short... I'm buying a new slim 500gb PS3 bundle. Thankfully, new games are still being published for the PS3 nearly a decade after it was first released -- that's incredible to say the least. The PS3's graphics are still very nice looking and there are a ton of great downloadable titles on the Playstation Network for it. All in all, it's a win-win decision -- more money in my pocket, I get to play new games and the PS3 functions as a BluRay Player / streaming media device.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm buying a last-gen PS3 over the current-gen Wii U. I've got a lot of love for Nintendo, but they need to lower their Wii U price before I consider hopping on board. Heck, I bet the NX will be out before I purchase a Wii U at this point.

That's a smart decision, JaredUnzipped. The Wii U's price definitely is too high and, unlike the PS3, there is no way it will be supported anywhere near ten years. At this point, it's not exactly a great value.

I'm not going to quote that long spiel so here we go.

@ Retro Deckades

This little shindig could just keep going for a long time because you love the Wii U and I don't. Now let's make this clear. I don't love the Wii U. But I don't recall saying I hate the Wii U. Aight?

Ok. Yes that list is a logical comparison, and I'll tell you why. JUST BE AUSE ITS A SEQUAL DOESNT MEAN ITS A REHASH... And here is the deal, Fallout 4 is my deciding factor because if it's anywhere close to what I'm sure it will be. It's game of the year material. I have never been disappointed with a fallout ge ever since I played the first one when it came out. Hell I even go back and play 1 and 2 at least once a year.

Here's the deal. I can play these games you hold on high and run, jump on an enemy, brake a box through the whole game... OR I can be a good guy, kill some baddies, save some lives, make life better for people or a bad guy, mass murder everyone, steal everything or just quest, loot, buy and customize weapons and armor, own a house and pimp it out., have a pet, name it Steve or whatever. I get a nice long storyline, and many short stories. Characters can be relatable. And I'm sorry but saying that the same game being released on a different system than it was intended would make it a winner doesn't make any since. That's like saying butter isn't good on wheat bread but it's awesome on white.

It's like a book series. They may have the same titles but it doesn't mean you're reading the same book over and over and over.

Now Zelda games do have a story and some of the elements I've stated but OMG every console release starting with ocirina of time forward is junk. It's like watching snails race a mile. The characters are all bland or flamboyant and just nerve racking. On the other hand I really like the handheld Zelda games (excluding the remakes) because they are faster paced and you actually feel like your getting somewhere.

I don't hate any Mario game but you've got to be honest with yourself. They all have the same plot and you do the same exact thing almost all the time.

Now I'm sorry if you got your panties in a twist. But my feeling and mind are not going to be changed no matter what gets said. I'm not trying to make an enemy but just because you don't agree doesn't mean you (or I) are right. So this means I'm done arguing.

Again though, this is MY opinion about why I think it's better games. You can agree or disagree whether you understand or not, but to tell me I'm wrong about what I should like in a video game just dumbfounded me.

Games are meant to be fun, but a specific game is not fun for everyone.

Hey palmer6strings,

I've obviously seemed to have pushed some buttons here, which wasn't my intention. I was simply looking for some clarification regarding some of your stances and opinions, particularly the ones you appeared to be stating as fact. I just thought I'd challenge you on a couple of things and have you elaborate on others because I was trying to better understand your point of view (after all, this is a message board that's meant for discussion).

Having said that, I don't know that I understand every analogy you tried to make, but I definitely have a better understanding of what you value in games, which is story and more complex game play. Admittedly, the Wii U lacks many of those types of games. However, many of the games it does offer are great, but they just don't have what you're looking for. You seemed to present the argument that because Wii U games are not the types of games you enjoy playing, they are bad. That also implied that some genres of games are inherently better than others. With both of those thoughts, I completely disagreed. As you said, a matter of opinion.

Perhaps you didn't notice, but no where in my post did I say you were wrong about what you should like in video games. As I said, I was simply questioning your arguments. If you don't want to defend your opinion, that's fine, but it seems like if someone posts their opinion online they would expect that they may have to defend it. Preferably in a civilized manner refraining from personal attacks, which is mostly what has transpired here (at least I tried to do so on my part -- in no way was this meant to be a personal attack and I hope you didn't view it as such).

Ya, I apologize, I wrote that at 1 A.M. I was tired and some of that didn't come out right. I by no means was angry. Nor was I trying to be an asshole. I didn't mean that you specifically said I shouldn't like the games I think are good.

What I like is options and in depth storyline. That comes with me playing a lot of single player because I didn't have a lot of people around to play 2 player quick relaxed style of games.

It's nice to play a leisure game every once in a while but I don't stick with it long because I lose interest.

I should have worded what I was saying better and am sorry that I lashed out.
