This sucks, IGN is reporting Satoru Iwata-san passed away today at only 55 years old.

:-[ As someone who found it endearing that the president of the company would talk directly to the fans in Nintendo Directs, (even if he was struggling through English), he will be missed.

I always loved everything he did, especially when talking to the fans. I always felt like he understood what it meant to be a Nintendo fan and related to us. He will be forever remembered in our fondest memories. Thank you for being such a good president Satoru Iwata-san.
To be this good it takes AGES!

Admittedly, I never really liked the direction he took the company when he took over in the early 2000's.  That said, I respect the hell out of him for his involvement with the Nintendo fan-base and his dedication to making the best choices and products that he believed were in the best interest for his company and gamers.  He seemed to have dedicated his life to the medium, and the world of gaming owes him a sincere debt of gratitude.  He will be missed.

This was really disheartening news. I am a big Nintendo fan and really liked the passion he had when he spoke to the fans. He came across really genuinely when he spoke.  :-\

It's sad that he died, but in all honesty, everything nintendo has came out with has been crap after the GameCube for home systems. The Wii and Wii U are just junky systems that are not living up to the name of Nintendo and are deffinitly not keeping up with the competition. Especially when it comes to playing with your friends over the net.

If they made the Wii/U to where I didn't have to flop around the room just to play a game I think I would like it better. But after I get off work, I am not in the mood to be pointing and moving around a controller to play. I just want to sit and chill.

On the flip side, I'm a huge fan of the handhelds. The 3D function I think is a little dumb but hey I can turn that off thankfully.

Let's hope whoever takes over keeps the company in a decent direction at least.
What are you looking at? You think baby's don't like video games? THEN YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT BABIES!!

not sure what to say, words count for sh*t at these times.
sufficed to say, i respected his 1/1 communications with userbase, just not some of the decisions as a whole. (nintendo DID croak and DIE for me after the cube, above response says it WAY better than the torrid abuse i whizzed their way. RSI and dancing is a good way to make a psycho riddled with rhumatism. yes, just got back from work, last thing i need is MORE bodily activity.  :( )
...
still, at least he stuck to his guns. RIP! :(
(have a wii and a newly acquired wiiu, i think i'm gonna puke... :'( )

Sad sad day, losing such an open and direct head of a major multi national corporation is major blow..........RIP Iwata-San.

I just really hope that they can bring some fresh blood in in, and not just promote Miyamoto or someone else who is still stuck in 1985 and is essentially driving Nintendo into the ground with outdated and far too insular (towards Japan only) tactics.

A young, fresh, "with it" approach from someone who understands the contemporary globalized market of mass appeal or die is what they sorely need.........and that will not come from one of the old heads like Miyamoto being made chief.

I was truly saddened by this news. The man was directly involved in many of the games that have brought me countless hours of joy. However, it is probably his values that I respect the most. He was always such a positive voice in and industry that can be surprisingly negative.

"Video games are meant to be just one thing. Fun. Fun for everyone." - Satoru Iwata

I can only hope that Nintendo, and the game industry as a whole, continues to create unique games and experiences and not just pander to the masses.

My first thought was that Reggie Fils-Aime might get the job, but then I thought about it more - traditionally-Japanese companies have a habit of only putting Japanese people in charge. We'll see, I guess.

Whilst you are right, its not unprecedented as the Sony head was a Westerner for some time (forget his name).

And also Nintendo did actually break with typical Japanese tradition when the promoted Iwata to chief! as he was the first non-Yamauchi family member in the companies long history to be in charge......and also, he was a young fella compared to how Japanese companies typically like to have "elder" heads running things.

So, Nintendo and Japanese gaming companies are not adverse to shaking things up in that breaking from tradition sense..........but I think that extending to Reggie becoming president is stretching a bit far! lol.

Not that I dont think it would be great but I just cannot see them doing it, and it will either be an old head like Miyamoto or perhaps a relatively young un-known Japanese developer guy.

I would love it if they would shake things up and almost "use" (sorry, could not think for better word) Iwata's sad passing to take a fresh approach and bring our beloved Nintendo back to REAL prominence and not just surviving on gimmicks and handheld market domination.

Perhaps someone who can realise what every single gamer in the world does...........that if they simply made a home console ON PAR with the latest MS/PS systems power and processing wise, then they would absolutely effin dominate!!! as if all of us were faced with all 3 consoles being able to play the same 3rd party games at the same graphical level, then why would you NOT choose Nintendo given the exclusives that you cannot get anywhere else?
