After many months of having 'clutter' around my game room I've decided to make some shelves.   I came up with a 'simple' design but we all know those aren't so simple.

I ended up going to Menards to pick up some shelves and figured this would cost about $100 for the entire thing.   While looking for a cart to gather up all the stuff I found 4 foot long shelves for only .99 each since they were 'damaged'.   I ended up cutting those shelves in half to make 2 shelves out of 1 for 4 foot by 7 inch shelves.

The sides were 1 7ft long board cut in half to 14 inches wide to make it a bit simpler.

I did this all while at my parents house and just put it all in the back of my van and drove it a hour to my apartment to assemble..

After I put it all together I bolted it to the wall before putting games on it.

I then loaded it with ALL my Xbox to Xbox one games.   with room for my collector sets and some figures.

With the discounted shelves and cost of gas I spent about $80 on it all!

Now to build one for my nintendo DS cases....

looking good!
i have too many games to list, hardly any present generation, LOTS of (perceived) retro games.
...
moving home soon, so this subject served as a pointer, thanks a lot for the share.
one way to help reduce the chances of getting crushed by a forward faller (outside of bolting to walls) is a strip of beading literally under the shelf upfront.
weight of the shelf squarely rests upon that beading (not one bit of the shelf base touches base, all center of gravity is shifted to the forward lower of the shelf) and the heavier the shelf is, the less likely it will fall forward like a tombstone and hurt somebody.
of course, if with family of children, no comment. (safety first, you knew what you got into.)
...
the shelves i have are prefabs (chipboard crap) but are surprisingly rigid.
taller than the average human (7" at least) but the down side, it can only hold twenty two dvd like dimension cases per shelf.
can be configured to stack jewel cases...which one of the shelves (1 of 3) is half set up to stack cd games.
...
yep, think i'll need a dedicated wall, an entire side of a room (or more depending on overall clearance) because anything else, is just slap-dash and unprofessional.. ???

It's nice to see folks building their own shelves.  It's remarkably easy if you just do a little planning.  I've always told folks that you can go to home depot/lowes and they'll cut your boards to length, so all that's left is to drive some screws and/or nails.  People often cite not having the tools to do the job.  It can literally be done with nothing more than a sheet of paper, pencil/pen, nails and a hammer.

Or just put a base on it.  Could be another big chunk o' chipboard with a footprint slightly larger than the base of the shelves.

Planning some big changes this winter (knocking 2 houses together).  We'll End up with 6 bedrooms, the largest of which is going to be my games room.  Custom building my own shelves in there, and I have to say, aside from getting my dream enormous kitchen, the shelving project is what I'm most excited about.

Ohh yeah, I have recently been able to proudly display all of my disc based games in one place for the first time EVER!........feels damned good to bask in the glory of it all!  ;D

Not built anything special, just received some nice tall units I could fit into the last remaining corner of my apartment (storing and being filled by 240 games!)

Cart only in UGC and boxed Nintendo (in box protectors though of course) pre-GameCube are and will always be in special units I sought out with doors to keep out dust and sunlight! ha ha)........thankfully the main one of these matches the new units I lucked into!! but unfortunately they cannot stand together due to space issues.

Was thinking of making my own one of these "OhhNoYouNintenDidnt's Collection" threads now that everything is out out boxes and drawers!! ha ha.
