Either way, what BOTH companies should be doing is allowing DIGITAL titles purchased to be played FOR FREE on the next gen system.

Microsoft has their new 'backwards compatibility' (which apparently does apply to downloaded games as well) and Sony has Crossplay (which only applies to some downloaded games)... though both are far too limited. 100% with you on the 'if the game's on your account you should be able to re-download it on the next-gen system' thing.

Why is everyone saying it's hardware that keeps the Xbox one from running 360 games?
That's not true at all. It's all software.
You've literally got a computer in a box that has a style of operating system they build to specifically watch tv... I mean play games on.
Hence mac dual booting windows... Or being able to play ps1 games on a Dreamcast or PC.

I like backwards compatibilty, but how they are doing it, I really don't care for and am glad that I still got  my 360 still hooked up alongside my xbone.

You're technically correct - the operating systems are different, and that's the reason why they can't play.

In terms of hardware, that is a more accurate description of the PS3.  The PS3 has a split CPU and GPU that handles things in a unique way, it's why PS3 was so hard to make decent multiplats for at first.  Games were made to optimiz that hardware style...the PS4 doesn't have that, thus it is more than just software.

Now, I am referring to physically reading the discs...not digital copies or dlc.
