When considering matte versus semi-gloss versus gloss it's really a matter of opinion/taste. There is no "better". Find what you like, and run with it.

Personally, I'm a matte guy.

Which paper looks closer to the real covers?

It depends on paper manufacturer's specifications, but it's on the border of shiny matte and semi-gloss.
I personally would go Semi-gloss.

For me, semi gloss is closest to retail.

Other than cost for full gloss, is there anything wrong with it? Is it really too shiny?

It's really up to personal preference, but I say it is, but not super bad, however the foggy sleeve of UGC dimmest it a bit.

What is the name of what you use for your own covers? I searched for "A4 semigloss" and "legal semigloss" and didn't find any standard photo paper labeled as semigloss.

HP Everyday photo paper semi-gloss, but could not find that either online last time I looked.
Stores still have it here.

Search for satin.  Same thing.

http://www.photopaperdirect.com/products/A4-Satin-Photo-Paper-Premium-200g.html

Think that's the one I normally buy.
Only downside to it, but not a big issue for me, is that it is single sided.  If you print on the wrong Side it makes a terrible mess.

Maybe it's different in Europe, but in the US, Satin and Semi Gloss are VERY different.  I used to manage a paint department in a hardware store when I was in college.  One of the most commonly asked questions was about the difference in paint sheens.  While flat and gloss were on the opposite ends of the spectrum, satin and semi-gloss were still different enough to have their own paint cans.  Satin had much less of a shine (noticeable difference) compared to Semi-gloss which was one step down from regular gloss.  Maybe the differences aren't as notifiable on paper.

One other thing I'll mention about glossy papers is that sometimes I've had trouble with getting finger prints on my pages that can show up later when the paper is in a game case.  That's part of the reason why I prefer matte paper.  But I will also say that the gloss paper looks very good if you can keep your fingers off of it.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

He is right about satin vs semigloss. Here's a comparison I found offline:

I agree when talking about paint - but take a look at the paper I linked to - it branded Satin/Semi Gloss.

Ugh.  That's what happens when they don't use industry standards.  :-\

Either way, I've seen the semi gloss paper that Sheep uses, and I thought it looked great.  I just stick with the matte that I've been using for the past year because I also like the way it looks and I have a good supplier for the paper.  (Also, I bought 500 sheets worth of that paper, so I'm stocked up for the moment.   ;))
