Which is better DVD case or Jewel case
(1/2) > >>
StrangeBrownie:
I've started to collect more PS1 games and since its the summer time there is a bunch of games out in garage sales in jewel cases.  But I'm trying to figure out if I want to make up DVD cases for them or not.  Thoughts?
Arseen:
If you can find CD case sized DVD cases (called half heights I believe) I would go with those.

I think I've seen 1, 2, 3 and 4 disc versions, but not sure are the thick enough to fit Manual as well?

Maybe Shadowfox could make those... but then we would also need one that is for 5 discs but that might not super big seller as I believe there is but only one such PS1 game: Myst.

Well of course one could make to hold 6 discs instead so one could store all 3 PS1 Command and conquer games in one boxset to make the case4 more theasable (how the F your write that word ;D, what I mean is to make more sense money-wise).
Never mind the word is feasible. 8)

Personally, I would use DVD cases, just because they match the PS2, and also because PS1 games have seen official re-releases in DVD cases anyway (Metal Gear Solid comes to mind). I don't know much about pricing, but I'm sure that these would be the cheapest since they're the most common. Only downside I can think of is finding box art for PS1 dvd cases due to the differences in proportion.

DVD case advantages:
They are cheaper.  New DVD cases tend to run about $0.20/case while new jewel cases tend to run about $0.40/case.
They look good.  I think DVD cases look better on a shelf and there is more room to show artwork on the spine.

DVD case disadvantages:
They are larger.  They will take up more room on a shelf than a standard jewel case
You need artwork for EVERY SINGLE game you own.  Even if you have a game CIB, you will need to find and print a cover for it to convert to DVD.

I prefer to use original jewel cases simply because I don't want to replace all of my original covers.  Most of my PS1 games don't have DVD artwork yet and it will take a lot of time and work to get all of them done.  Plus, I don't know where I would store my original jewel cases if I switched to DVD cases because I certainly wouldn't get rid of them.

Also, there is one other 5 disc game.  I don't know the name of it, but it was a Japanese dating sim that used the extra discs to have the girls call you by your actual name.  At least that's what I learned on the PS1 episode of Game Sack.   8)
Blumpkin:
I'll always prefer CD jewel cases if I have the original manuals and inserts. They take up less room and look good enough on the shelf to me.

But I haven't been able to print replacement inserts in a way that they look satisfactory in a jewel case, but printed DVD covers look fine. The third option would be CD poly cases, which I haven't experimented with yet.
