MS, Sony & Nintendo could be switching to cardboard boxes in 2009...

Well, not really... but if Wal*Mart has their way (and Wal*Mart generally does), we could be looking at something like this fairly soon:

"Switching to cardboard packaging would be like taking almost 4,000 cars off the road in terms of equivalent green house gas emissions."

I'm all for saving the planet and such, but shipping games in cardboard sleeves where they're too prone to damage isn't something I'm going to jump for joy over.

Wal*Mart has the power to make this happen - if we let them... we must fight to stop them, now!

Admin Doom is a pretty cool guy. Eh changes thread titles and doesn't afraid of anything.

XanderBoy:

I really don't buy that cardboard argument.  What other impacts does the additional use of paper have on the environment compared to that of plastic other than greenhouse gases?

If anything, games will move towards digital download, but Wal-Mart won't ever mention that!  They can't make money off digital downloads.

Ragnarok2103:

yeah, i dont like that idea at all...i mean, at least with this site, we'll be able to make our own, but if i'm already spending 60 on a game i dont really feel like shellling out the extra money for a case, paper to print the cover on, and ink. i hope they dont do this, becuase that would not be cool.  computer games just started selling games in cases, and it would just suck to have all that reversed.

and i know that things are moving towards digital downloads, but i really, really, really hope that they dont. i like having the physical items on my shelf that i can look at. besides, i dont really think it'll be feasible for all games to be digital downloads anytime soon. if every game was a couple of gigs in size, you could only have a handful of games on your system. and what happens if you system breaks, or is stolen, are you fucked for all your games? its fine for small xbox live arcade games, but when it comes to big title games that cost 60 bucks i'd like to have it sittin on my shelf, and not hidden away on a HDD.

Next thing they're going to say is just not to have instruction manuals at all. Waste of paper, doesn't matter if (to me) I feel my purchases are complete with them. It's for the environment.

This whole "going green" thing is just fucking bogus. I am sick of it. I don't mind turning my thermostat down or leaving shades on my windows, but dammit don't fuck with my right to keep my games in an orderly manner. Look at my NES collection, the damn cardboard boxes of games that are left have been withered down, creases over the years. Yet my PSX and Dreamcast cases are just fine. God help me if we all go BACK to cardboard.
