I'm looking for Dreamcast DVD style covers (with an all white spine) for the games Cannon Spike and Bangai O. Is there a master list of all dreamcast covers made in this style? I figured someone must be able to help me with this. The orange block at the upper part of the spine throws me off for some reason. All of my other covers have all white spines.

Thanks in advance if anyone is willing to share their download or perhaps tinker with an existing copy to help a guy out!

P.S. out of curiousity, it looks like the upper orange block spine is the most popular cover type for dreamcast downloads? Interesting. I would have thought the all white ones would be.

I noticed this post yesterday but didn't have time to respond. Thank you Mel!

One more request: (I should have taken note of all the covers I needed before requesting)- Does anyone have Mars Matrix in this similar style? That is one game I'd love to cover (I'm trying to get all the great DC games)

Thanks in advance if someone has time to help me out or if they have it!

Here you go cojack, Mars Matrix with a white spine (all the same as the others Mel gave you here) is on this site =

http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?cover_id=5729

Although I cleaned it up quite a bit and revamped some logos in my own one.......but it is with the black spine as I make mine that way.

Let me know if you would prefer my one but with the white spine and front left section, and Ill adapt mine for you......not a huge difference to the naked eye but when you zoom in.......ohh my the revelations of zooming in 1500%!  ;D

Any others you need, let me know, as I am a big SHMUP fan and I imagine we have similar taste in games judging by your requests here.

I have also made some that arent available anywhere like Under Defeat and Border Down (two of the BEST SHMUPS on the system!!!) - although I have kept the Japanese language on the back covers due to, well, I prefer Japanese text! lol, its so nice to look at........and of course, I dont have the ability or inclination to translate it.  ;)

To Update: I could still use an all white DC cover spine for Mars Matrix (plus Border Down and Under Defeat if anyone has them).

Hey OhhNo,

I appreciate the gesture and those covers all look awesome (I wish I had started with the orange tab on the spine) but what I was requesting is a cover of Mars Matrix that had an all white spine (no orange tab) for a dvd style cover. Is there one that already exists? The link you gave me went to the default search for Mars Matrix. I already checked it but it didn't have exactly what I wanted.

We probably do have similar taste in gaming. I've always loved shmups but I'm not as well versed in them as I'd like (I just originally loved Raiden 3 back in the day on the arcade- it rocked my socks off).

You'd recommend Under Defeat and Border Down? Never heard of them, are they on the DC? Based on your recommendation, could you (or someone else) help me with making that small alteration for those 2 game's covers so I can get them and slap covers on em?

I have tried using gimp before to try and make my own changes but I'm not very good at it and I don't do as good a job typically, which is why I make requests.

What other games would you recommend for the DC (shmups or no)? I could recommend you some too perhaps

Sure man, I understood what you were after but I was not sure how well versed you are in adapting already finished covers yourself with the little tweaks you need.

On that, I (and many, if not all, here) use Photoshop........never even heard of Gimp to be honest, lol, as Im not some "graphical artist" type person, I have just learnt this and do these for fun and this site.

I currently have 4 separate covers I am working on for people (from requests) but more than happy to re-work these spines for you, just want to get these others done first as I have been working on them for awhile and promising to have them done soon for those guys.

As for Under Defeat and Border Down???.......man, I would say outside of Giga Wing and the king of the SHMUPS Ikaruga, for me, they are actually the best SHMUPS on the system!!! Under Defeat also got a HD remake on the 360 which is also awesome and can be had really cheap (in my region at least, which the UK).

As for other games (mostly SHUMPS but some others) for the DC.......basically my favourites =

Castle Shikigami II - Cool SHMUP
Chaos Field - Awesome SHMUP
Gunbird 2 - Even BETTER SHMUP
Hydro Thunder - Cool speed boat racer
Ikaruga - As mentioned......the all time pinnacle of SHMUP'ness for me.
Jet Set Radio - Super fun skater game which essentially invested the cell shaded graphics style.
Karous - Japanese exclusive SMHUP, pretty good.
Psyvariar 2 - Another fine SHMUP.
Radirgy - Very inventive and diverse SHMUP.
Zero Gunner 2 - Fantastic SHMUP.

Yeah, as you can see.......I love my SHMUPS! lol, and the DC sure is the place for them!

I do enjoy a lot of other games on it but those are so obvious they perhaps werent worth mentioning (Sonic, Res. Evil and the plethora of amazing fighters).

You should look into the homebrew scene as well man (if you havent already) as they are some incredible games made for the DC, including many great SHMUPS, and is a development scene still very much active.

Anyway, I shall try and whip up those white spines for you tomorrow.  :P

Actually.............as I was beginning to fall asleep at the Photoshop wheel here, I was closing everything done in preparation for heading off to bed (Im in the UK, so its 00:50am right now, lol) I thought F it and just made up the white spine for you.

I actually did Border Down as well for you (first for some reason) but then realised I hadnt changed the bottom white box on the back cover, so I instead of doing that I decided to do the one you ACTUALLY wanted from scratch instead.  ;D

Will post Border Down and Under Defeat for you tomorrow.

Anyway, here you go =

Mars Matrix White Spine - This is my cleaned up version, not the ropey when zoomed in one we have hosted on the main site.

Wow, thanks dude. I just saw your recent post.

It's funny because I thought you didn't understand exactly what I wanted but now I realize I didn't understand what you were trying to help me with. I don't have photoshop (you have to pay for it I believe) so I tried using gimp (a free thing). I'm not very good at it since I'm self taught but I managed to do some n64 covers before. It was time consuming though. I wish someone would teach me how to use photoshop (can't learn from the youtube videos, don't have very good hearing so I wouldn't be able to listen to the people on it). How expensive is photoshop anyway?

You cover of Mars Matrix is cool. Now that I've printed out like 10 dc covers in all white spine, I feel like I can't go back and use other spines (need uniformity!). Totally understand about you fulfilling other needs first. I can wait but I definitely will print as soon as I receive them! I'd do them myself but like I said, I don't really know how.

So, you're a fan of Giga Wing, also? If you had to rank the DC shmups, 1-10 or whatever, what would your rankings look like? 1. Ikaruga, 2. ? , etc. I like Shmups but I never played them much as a kid and am going to try and get into some now. I'm guessing you can burn games for homebrew? Most of my DC games are all real copies (I have 19) but I didn't realize until recently that burning them was so easy and that it made getting "rare" titles much easier.

It's funny you mentioned them because I already have Hydro Thunder and Jet Set Radio for the DC. Some other titles I have and love for the DC are:

Crazy Taxi 1/2
Skies of Arcadia
Grandia 2
Sonic Adventure 1/2
MvsC2

They are pretty obvious though to anyone who is well versed with the DC. Skies of Arcadia is my favorite rpg ever (was the first I ever played). Can't recommend that enough and Grandia 2 is also great.

No problem man, glad you like it and also get that I wasnt trying to FORCE you into adopting my black and orange spine preference! lol.

Photoshop costs A LOT of money yes, typically around £250/$370 new.........BUT..........like most things digital, it can be downloaded for free via torrents and such but I wont go into that in case it breaches forum rules or something here.

You could pick up and older version of Photoshop a lot cheaper though, I actually still use an early version of Photoshop CS3 which I think came out over 10 years ago! and it serves my purposes exactly.

Plus, and linked to your thoughts about learning it, as you probably gathered it is not an easy thing to get to grips with at first but in all honesty, if you have any kind of creative bones and are even vaguely proficient in using computers, then anyone can pick it up and become good with it. It just takes time really, I dont think anyone would learn how to properly use it from a Youtube instructional video (maybe little functions and what little tools within it can do)........as with most things in life, for me you just have to dive right into it and learn as you go! just can be and is quite daunting at the start.

I have been casually messing around with it for a couple of years but only really in the last 6 months have I really knuckled down to becoming better with it and I have improved a lot (thanks to feedback/pointers from people here via covers I made at the start and having them point all the flaws I need to address and focus on! lol).

So my best advice is to try and get hold of a cheap older version of Photoshop and just stuck into it! noone can teach it to you as far as Im concerned, and if they did it would be teaching you THEIR way and that might not fit with how you want to use and learn with it.

Man, totally understand about uniformity! lol, I am precisely the same........you should see my various collections, I dont even order them alphabetically but by production company logo as I simply HAVE to have the uniformity of seeing "Capcom" and "Konami" etc. all lined next each other!

So with these DC covers, not only could I do that but I could also ensure that every colour scheme of every spine matches and is uniform, hence why I have spent time adapting and re-doing perfectly usable covers to suit what I WANT..........whats the point of collecting and displaying the games you love if you cant also enjoy the ordering and displaying of them as well!!?? thats pretty much what this site is all about.  ;D

Man, tough to rank my DC SHMUPS, so many great ones but a tentative go would be =

1 - Ikaruga
2 - Giga Wing
3 - Giga Wing 2
4 - Border Down
5 - Under Defeat
6 - Gunbird 2
7 - Zero Gunner 2
8 - Chaos Field
9 - Radirgy
10 - Karous

But that can change a lot depending on how Im feeling but that top 5 is pretty much constant. Ohh and another thing, you have to get yourself a arcade stick for the DC!!! not many choices but thankfully, the official (Hori or Agetech made) stick is one of the best sticks of all time (for me) and is an absolute MUST for any SHMUP fan, especially as the standard pad for the DC is one of the worst of all time (again, for me, lol).

Also on the burning of games..........ohh yeah! most of these are burnt due to the popularity and expense of their real counterparts, so being able to play and have a physical copy of a game I could only have if I forked out £60/$95 to buy! makes the DC and its ability to play burnt games, un-modified in any way, such a great console (for us, not Sega! lol).

Oddly though, most of the really great homebrew games (including pretty much ALL of the best new SHMUPS, that would feature heavily in my top 10 if I could play them) are actually only obtainable via the purchasing of the physical copies from the homebrew developers!!! lol

So yeah, these are people who exploiting the DC's ability to effectively be hacked right out of the box due to a lack of DRM.......but then when THEY produce an awesome game that people want, they DRM the f*ck out of it so it is not able to be copied and put as a digital download!

So, although I cannot get hold of those awesome games (will save those for another post as this one is long as hell already, lol) as they go for a lot of money too (like £50/$75).......I have to respect the fact that these "hackers" so to speak, are putting in measures to ensure their games are not "hackable"........whilst they hack a system to make the game in the first place!  ;D ;D ;D

Cool games their yep, not an RPG fan at all to be honest (Zelda is as far as I go and even with that I get annoyed by the requirement to talk to people and read a lot of text! lol)........SHMUPS are my favourite genre simply because they are pick up and play, no bull shit, high adrenaline, and requiring of fast reflexes and skill.

I do like a lot of other types of games, as long as they have a steady pace to them, so many platformers, adventure, racing and action games are good for me.......probably the furthest I go into RPG territory whilst still loving a game would a Castlevania: Symphony of the Night kind of thing, of Metroid games, where there is a lot collecting of items and exploration but not a real linear narrative, so lots of choice and crucially not a lot of dialogue and talking to people involved.

what is photoshop cs2?

It was the version of Photoshop I WAS USING up until last year. It is more than powerful enough for what we do on the site.
Some tools are missing but CS2 is still a GREAT program.

You can really get it for free? I'll have to do that then. Looks like I have to sign up with abobe (free sign up I'm sure) then download it?

Badass. I will have to print these all out today...

Additionally, what makes Giga Wing 1 the 2nd best shooter on the DC in your mind?
