I've tested out scanning the cover of a manual with my EPSON Perfection V600.  The scan quality is great, but I imagine it being a hassle to have every page, back and front, aligned properly.  I was thinking about getting a double-sided document scanner, like the Fujitsu ScanSnap s1300i.  I'd rather go straight into the touch-up than spend an hour fiddling around with finding the right angle for every page. Do you think this would help?

product not suited for game manuals for various reasons.

slick referral string too, I might add. Here's a better link:
http://www.amazon.com/Fujitsu-ScanSnap-S1300i-Document-Scanner/dp/B008HBFADQ

skip the seller sites; head straight to the manufacturer's page:

yawn. A good flat-bed scanner and some heavy books will work well.
Arseen is very good at scanning manuals.  ;)

I don't know what's slick about pasting the address that was in my address bar, but I updated the link.  I have a good flat bed scanner, but I don't know how to efficiently align 20 sheets.  I'll post a preview and you guys can tell me if it's good enough.

You'll likely have to align them after scanning. I'd pull the manuals apart as well (if you're not already).

Yes, so this!
Manuals disassembled (atleast the ones that are stabled, glued ones I would not dare to break).
Scanned 600DPI (300DPI minimum), absolutely straight, flat and moire free.

Thank you.

Out of all my attempts, I got the best result scanning a page sideways and using Photoshop's automated straightening.  :-\  There seems to be some margin loss when I line it up with the edge of the bed.  If this turns into too much of a hassle for me, maybe I could send my manuals to someone and let them keep them if they scan them for me.

I can scan...

But to combat the loss, put something between the edge of the scanner and the manual, something like inch wide 5 inch long strip of paper, that helps you align the page.

LOL You know by now that I will just beg for scans - like a dog for a bone.
I am content with scans for now. You've scanned alot for me all ready. I'm happy and Thankful. No requests my Friend.

Regarding manual scans, you are very good at scanning boxes and manuals. I am just thinking that if anyone should offer any scanning advice, then it should be Arseen.

Okay, I bought an L shaped carpenter square, I think that will work.  After I get my scans, I can send the pages to you just to see if your results are any better.

The biggest problem with double sided scanners are consistency.  I ran my Super Nintendo manual collection through an Epson DS-510 and the results were ok at 600dpi, but the only reason I say that is because it has spit out 20,000 pages which would have taken an *eternity* with a flatbed.  Maybe it was just the software, but some scans came out terribly dark.  Also, if you get any gunk off a manual or dust specks, be prepared to rescan a couple hundred pages with a white streak on them (which I'm still finding those).  Luckily this Epson does a reasonable job flattening out the spine.  Perfect? No.

The other kicker is that if you do take the staples out and the pages apart, good luck getting them to re-align later after retouching the images.  Image 1=back page, cover. Image 2=inside, inside back cover.  Image 3=Page 20 whatever, Page 1.  Your manual's inside facing pages are now stretched from image 2 left to image 3 right.

When I did do a bunch of flatbed scans, I ended up getting a set of these and trimmed to fit the edges of my scanner.  Again, not perfect, but it was consistent across scans.  Definitely still need to weight down the pages/covers (It's thin but not that thin), but at least you aren't loosing any off the edge.

This little tongue, telling lies and tempting fortunes, has led me on a merry quest- something to do, I guess...

No problem, just make sure you have something flat, hard and heavy on the manual when you scan.
And make sure it's not on the ruler, so no unfocus spots can occur.

preview was so small that I could not see were there any.

I used a book with 1,000 pages.  The manual has a simple design, and I plan on fixing it up a lot in Photoshop.

Sounds heavy enough.

Like I said, preview was so small that i could not tell were or were there not flaws. :P
