| Modern good games that actually suck? |

Is it just me, or is all these new games that are coming out that have all this hype actually actually crap? About 90% of these games that get a crapload of positive reviews and are put on this extremely high pedestal by the publishers AND fanboy/girl gamers really bother me, because I'm all like "HEY! This looks like it might actually be a good game!" Then to my not so much of a surprise anymore, I buy it and it blows dick... Examples: Destiny... This game is the biggest, stinkiest pile of shit I've ever played in my life. Sure the graphics are good and the controls are alright. Other than that I had the game beat in less than 10 hours. I currently have over 200 dreaded and painful in it due to the fact that everyone on my friends list always wanted to play it. Why?? I have no freakin clue because the story (or lack there of) sucked. I don't care if they are going to make the game last 10 years. I don't want to play a shitty game that long just to know what the fuck is going to happen. Also, to actually have a little bit of fun, you have to grind all day to MAYBE get what you were hoping to get due to the pull the lever at the slot machine physics of the game. Battlefield Hardline... Again the graphics are good, controls are good, multiplayer sucks ass. I was lead to believe that matches would be like actual cops and robbers... No sorry it's not. It's like every other freaking FPS out there. I was at least hoping for a good coop campaign but that isn't there either. Plus the ge seems very limited. That wall that's only 3 feet high... Ya you have to walk around it... Come on I mean wtf. Dragon Age Inquasition... The graphics, gameplay, and controls are good. The story is ok but I feel like I'm lost half the time and it just gets boring. Multiplayer is very lackluster. I was at least hoping again for a coop campaign. Let down again. Almost every game for the wii I have bought is a letdown. No need to actually point out games... I could go on forever but I'm not... Instead I will give one example of a game that was extremely underrated. Fantasy Life for the 3DS. This was an amazing game. Simple but OMG it was and still is fun as fuck. Over 200 hours in this game also but I was always having fun. Never felt letdown except for the fact there never was an actual English released stratagy guide. Game informer gave this game a 6... But will give NFL2K84620204947 a 9.5 out of 10... Seriously. What the actual fuck. Why is everyone so damn hooked on graphics?? Sure they make a GREAT game better. But that's it. It doesn't make a bad game good. I'm so tired of wasting my money... Thankfully there is a few good games like Resident Evil revelations 2 that I'm already having a blast with or I would just go ahead and chuck all my new gen systems of my roof and pee on them. Ok, now that I got that out of my system, I'm sorry for the long rant. These are my feeling, I don't care your opinion is the same as mine or not. Just needed the release. |

I agree, although I'd say it's more around 75% or so, since there are some games this gen that (I think) really stand out. But I know what you mean. Fore every great game we get, there are 3 or 4 Assassins Creed Unities. Almost everything is a remake, sequel or "HD Remastered" of a game that came out two years ago. |

That's pretty much this generation in a nutshell. AC:Unity, Ryse, Sunset Overdrive, Drive Club, The Order: 1886, Watch_Dogs, Thief, The Crew, The Evil Within, Resident Evil 6, Dungeon Keeper iOS and pretty much anything Final Fantasy are among the biggest examples of games that had tons of potential, hype and everything going for it and were either 'meh' or just... bad. Really really bad. Then there's the obvious we-all-knew-it-coming games like Rambo and Sonic Boom, which surprised no one but hey - still showed just how bad this gen is. Almost all the good games of this gen have just been regurgitation of old games. It's pretty damn sad when the best games we have are a remake of Resident Evil, a remake of Grim Fandango and a remake of freaking Last of Us. They're re-releasing DmC of all things. DmC! That's how desperate they are. I've never seen so many kids suddenly getting into retro gaming, and for once it's not just a bunch of hipsters trying to look cool - they really are desperate for games that are actually, ya know - GAMES. |

Which is a very good point. And it makes me very glad I never sold off all my games when I was a kid. (Wouldn't be here if I wasn't a classic gamer right!? Lol) But ya, I mean I will admit I have liked the Assasin's Creed games though it haven't played any past 3. But I think for new home consoles, I haven't found a game I just absolutely loved. The last game I did love was Dragons Dogma. And that's been longer than you think. |

Is it not the same with all artistic and creative forms though? games have actually held out the longest but think about it = Art (as in actual art art) = disappeared from the cultural space due to a lack of originality and relevance. Music = has been re-hashing, re-packaging and generally getting worse creatively for the last 25 years. Film = Remakes anyone? remakes? yeah.........remakes. Games = remakes........FIFA and CoD year after year are the top selling games. The point being, people like us see it and dont like it.......but the fact is, familiarity sells!!! the music, movies and games that are the same old tired crap sell the most! people do not want change as we are so full on insecurity on a societal level that we have to revert to states where old familiar comforts are the only things that can allay the ontological fear. EVEN WE ARE DOING THIS!!!.......we arent being original or "different" here.........retro gamers are doing the exact same thing, its just that we are doing not doing it directly through consumer cultural purchasing or engaging with current trends that make us feel safe, we are simply reverting back to old ones from our youth. Hmmm, sorry, this topic just sparked my political mind...........this my friends, is both the result and crisis of post/late modernity. Creativity has been consumed by fear, and not just "ohh, fear, yeah, fear the terrorists" but fear in all walks of life.......we are a society that assess all things through the risks they represent (of course, all societies do and have to an extend), so when a music producer, film maker, game developer is trying to convince investors of the merits of their creative, original concept, and those investors turn around and say something "Ok.....but what are the numbers on that? what can you project will be our profits?", what does that developer say when he doesnt have those numbers. So what does he do to appease investors? he makes things more formulaic and akin to things and formulas that produce sales......THEN he can show those investors projections.........THEN his new and "improved" project is green lit. Neo-liberal consumer capitalism my friends........its a beautiful thing.........and is the reason we are stuck in the cultural void of repetition and banality. |
