No no no. The goal is to create demand, which Nintendo is excellent at doing. They release some new "limited" whatever just about every month on top of the whole amiibo thing.
In doing so, you get people to buy more than one of the exact same product (I.e. special edition 3DS systems). Who needs two? Nobody. But many suckers who may already have a 3DS will also want whatever weak-ass special edition they come out with next month as well, and so they do.
As far as amiibos go, I wouldn't expect any of the newer releases to be "rare" by any measure of the word. They've built a HUGE amount of hype around the product and got people roped into thinking that they've gotta get em all on day one or it ain't gonna happen. So everyone buys em in quantity (again, getting you to buy more than one of the EXACT same item) becuase they think of them as an invesemt.
Ha. That's a laugh. There will probably be more sealed amiibos than open in 5 years
